Cost for yard staff holding for the dentist?

It's her own property and I still feel £10 would be fair, £15 steep but ok as she would bring in in twos and put them in a pen for the dentist.

We are going to pay it as my friend uses her for lessons and stuff. But I won't be using her yard/services again as I feel she's ripping people off/being a bit underhand.

Seems a bit harsh? You seem to be assuming that because she owns the property and is doing the work herself that she has no costs and is not permitted to make any money?? She is only being underhand if you have had previous conversations about extras and they haven't been disclosed or she's made up rules as she goes along with no system for charging. She could have notified the extra charge on fb yes, but equally you could have checked if there was a handling charge and you didn't. Personally, it would prompt me to clarify what is and isn't included but given it is a small one off for a service which was provided and you have left the yard anyway, I would just pay. Were you otherwise happy with the service? If so, it seems a bit petty to bad mouth someone over it.

I think your mistake as already said is not having a charge agreed in advance. I wouldn't expect it to be for free under that arrangement. To be honest, though, the monthly visiting days alone would put me off the place. I like to see my horses when I like (within reasonable hours!) and definitely not monthly!

I disagree, having either used myself, or been involved with, professional sets ups that look after the complete care of a horse for an absent owner, then there has never been any additional handling charges for this type of thing. It really is routine to just build it into the business model.
the cheapest full grass livery I’ve known though is £70/week.

I completely wouldn’t object to a charge but I would expect it to be contractually highlighted up front

So sorry to hijack this thread, but I run a very small private yard with one or two liveries on a DIY basis to help cover the costs of running my own horses. I always put the already made feeds and haynets in for the liverys in the morning for them for no charge....I'm on site have to feed mine anyway, so putting in 4 feeds and 4 nets doesn't take very long. Ive been asked to put in an evening feed and net now for 2 of them......should I charge for this? and if so, how much do you think would be acceptable? I've never charged for doing the morning feeds, and always been happy to do it, but was wondering if I should make a small charge for evenings too. TIA

Your weekly / monthly rent should already include the cost of facilities, maintaining the facilities, and popping in the morning hay and feed. If you don’t feel the charge is right for this consider increasing the base charge.

For the two extra evening nets and feeds to put in, are you there already? I think a normal yard charge would be £2.50 an item a time. With a discount if it’s 7 days a week. So £7-14 charge per horse per week would seem reasonable.

Yes (although would consider insurance implication of now accepting paid work), you need to set boundaries otherwise you will end up offering full livery for the price of DIY - Set your charge, put together a small written amendement of contract document for you both to sign to say 'doing x, y, z which will be charged at £x per time and paid with monthly livery bill. Must be notified 'x' hrs in advance if this service is not required for a particular day. Not liable for contents of feed, feeds prepped by owner.' and then both sign it

I think most yards do extras here and there without charging, so if you get a bill for something it's fair to pay it without quibbling. We all forget those times we've asked the yard to top up hay and water because we're running late, or change a rug because it's started raining etc. Swings and roundabouts.

That is utterly meaningless. We all know that grass livery horses are mostly unsupervised (which is fine) and just checked twice a day.
That may be your opinion, but given that any intervention, in case of illness or injury, will be unpredictable and not time limited, then actually I don't consider it to be meaningless.
