My horse got a new set of shoes 3 weeks ago at a cost of £85. 3 weeks later he loses a hind shoe and the farrier charges me £38 to put a new one back on. Is it me or is this expensive?

That sounds very expensive!

That is what my farrier charges me for a trim and front set.

He put my horses front shoe on earlier in the week which he had pulled off after only 3 weeks. I had the shoe and was £10.

Did you have the old shoe put back on or was a new one needed??

If if was the old shoe put back on then my farrier will do it for free!!!!

Seems expensive to me, although I live up in SW Scotland and generally farriers seem cheaper up here. Its last year since I had a shoe put back on, and if I remember correctly it cost me £10 to get it done, I did have the shoe. I live about 20 miles from my farrier, so taking travelling into consideration I thought it was cheap.

Have just fainted 85 quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My farrier is £60 a set. He didnt charge me to put a shoe back on he just came out when he was next in the area and said he would charge me a extra quid to cover the nails when he next comes out. Although it was only three days since he fitted the shoes.

I agree, £85 for set of normal shoes? If my horse loses one which is very rare, my farrier puts back on shoe if I've found it or replaces it with a spare and doesn't charge me. I pay £62.50 for full set of shoes with road studs behind. He is great farrier, but on hearing how expensive yours is, I'll have to appreciate him even more!

I pay £65 a set and my farrier is great. He doesn't charge to put a new shoe on if they lose one and will trim my pony for free. And no I don't wear short skirts.!!!

If my horse lost a shoe within a few days of being shod, the farrier would come back and do it for nothing. I suppose if the shoe was completely lost he might charge a bit, but he doesn't think that his shoes should come off!

Think new set is £68, just gone up from £65.

Thanks guys - I was thinking it was just me thinking it was expensive!

He has normal shoes although does have 2 stud holes in each - £1.50 per stud hole.

It was a new show which he had to put on.....

My horse recently lost a shoe after a week and when I asked him how much he said 'Nothing, that's a guarantee job'. I actually felt guilty and tried to pay him as he had to put a brand new shoe on but he refused payment. He's a lovely man and worth his weight in gold.
A full set normally costs £55.

I pay £65 for a full set with road nails and thats expensive where we live. Lost a shoe the other week and he charged £10 to put a new one on, would have been free if I could have found the shoe, which I did that same night!! despite looking for it before he came :D

I pay £55 for a full set of shoes and then £1 per each stud hole ( have one in each shoe ) To come out if we loose a shoe he normally just charges a tenner for a new one, however if it is only a week or 2 since he origionally put shoes he normally does it for free.

That sounds very unreasonable. I have had several farriers over the years and none has charged more than £10 to replace a shoe.

I have 2 farriers. 1 is a bit more expensive (a full set is £58), but he will put the shoe back on for free is the horse looses one. My other farrier is cheeper (£50 for a set of shoes) but he charges £10 to put a new shoe on if the horse looses a shoe, or £5 if you have the shoe.

Unless you have fancy shoes put on your ned, your farrier sounds rather expensive to me!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry wino you're not the only one with an expensive farrier. As a part of the agreement for my new loan horse I have to use a farrier who charges just under £80 for a new set of shoes and travel, this was just a week later after I had the horses feet trimmed for £30. So that's over £100 this month for just the one horses shoes..I almost died of shock!
For my own horse I use a different farrier who charges £55 for a new set including travel and he travels at least 3 times as far to get to us as the other one. It's ridiculous!

I pay £60.00 a set, £1 per road nail (one in each shoe) and £1 for each stud hole (two in each shoe)

To put on a lost shoe is £5 or a couple of cans of cider :D

Its expensive but then I guess that might be due to location - sorry not read all replies and not sure where you are. Mine are £70 full set on natural balance. Farrier would charge me if he had to make an extra journey and it wasn;t his fault (which generally it wouldn;t be!)

£20 for a call out isn't unreasonable I'd say. £10 if he's in the area

Why do you have 2 farriers, just being nosey

Yikes, that is expensive! When I put out a friends 17.2 elephant for a run over the winter and he ripped a shoe off, bending it badly so it was unusable, the farrier was out within 2 days and only charged a fiver for a brand new shoe (and they are huuuge). He did say it was usually a tenner, but he would do it for a fiver. Nice man :)

:eek::eek:

My farrier never charges me to put a lost shoe on, even if I can't find the lost one. :)

My Farrier charges £70 for a full set of Natural Balance shoes and has charged me £25 to come out and put a shoe back on less than 2 weeks after they went on! I know that there are cheaper Farriers in our area, but as I have learnt to my cost not all Farriers are equal! And he's worth every penny!

Mine are about £60 a set, with one stud hole in each of the hinds and non slip nails all round.

If I loose one, have the shoe and am happy to wait until he is passing it costs me £5 to have it put back on. Obviously this goes up if I need a replacement shoe or want a special visit\it done in a hurry.
