cost of being PTS?

Oh dear - I'm sorry to hear this
frown.gif

Is it a cost-based decision? I was told about £110 for a small pony for PTS by the vet, and the kennels do it for £50 if you take it there. Obviously disposal costs on top of option 1.

R.I.P. whoever this is

he has a good life he is 34 this years, he just isn't happy anymore so i going toi do the sensible thing.

I know it's a hard decision but you are right in doing it for his benefit rather than keeping him going for your self. Our fairly local disposal people charge about £80-£100 on a weekday (as is normal it's dearer on weekends - mine was on a Sunday and cost £140). If your in Essex/Herts pm me and I'll give you their contact details - it's a family business and they are really nice to deal with at a horrible time.

thanks for the replies.i'm in cornwall. i've been trying to phone local kennels but i'm get no answer.

It cost us £200 on Easter Saturday, that was our local knacker firm, who came out within the hour for our very ill 17hh shireX

My mare has just been pts at the vets, cost £400 inc cremation and return of her ashes in a box. Just gives you an idea for comparison.

When I worked fot the hunt it was £60 but that was 3-4 years ago.

I had my girl PTS by the vet and that was £220, including the call out (Boston-Spalding)

Im so sorry Demelza, Id rather get the hunt to do it. If you want any help let me know.
He's had a great life, very well loved and cared for.

Sorry if i have the wrong end of the stick here?

I really do hope that are you going to stay with him while he is pts? and not just leave him. I cant think of anything worse than not being by there side in there last few minutes upsetting or not its nice for them to be with someone they itleast know in an area they dont.

It may be to much for Bramblebits to stay with the pony whilst it is being done.I think Bramblebits is brave enough to make the dessision and if she cant stay there then i dont think anyone should get at her for it.

I agree give her a break, either way if the hunt came to one of mine or i took them to the hunt i couldn't stand there and see my horse's get pts, if it was an injection by the vet i could but not a bullet. All mine will go to the hunt.

have you ever been with a horse when it was PTS? well i have and i wouldn't be doing it again. IMO he will not know if i'm there are not.

Actually it is kindest for the horse to be dealt with by somebody who is calm and quiet and not upset by the whole process. I can understand why anybody wouldn't want to be there and don't think that it is a cruel choice

Well its just my opinion i just asked i understand that some people wont. I just think its nicer they itleast end there days with someone they know in surroundings they know.

I got told about some people who loaded up there horse to go to the hunt kennels to be shot he was calling and everything i personally think there scum and i wouldn't put them out if they was on fire as i think it is a very selfish thing to do to not be by there side but then again i wouldn't send my ponies to the hunt kennels anyway.

Well the predicament im in i couldn't afford to have a vet out to do it and pay for the ashes, you are obviously well off! Its snotty people like YOU i wouldn't piss on if you were on fire!

i certainly know that i would probably be in hysterics and i really wouldn't want to upset my horse and so would leave him there myself, some people want to have the last memory of their horse as one of him alive, but its everybody's right to choose i suppose. give her a rest, shes about to lose her horse.

you obviously have not seen a horse fight the injection then, believe me it's nicer to have them shot one bullet and it over not fighting for 30 minutes then still ends up being shot.

We all have different opinions and value our animals in different ways!

I am in no way snotty in anyway shape or form having been brought up in Essex its hardly snotty around there! Im very far from it actually.

I am not well off eithier but theres things called insurance and credit cards loans etc! If it means my pony dies dignerfied death.

I just think when a horse in there last moments they should be pts at home not taken away from there surroundings i find it selfish not to stay with them! I would of course be upset when either of my ponies time comes but it makes no odds about my feelings i shall be with them till the very end as they deserve the best and nothing but.

RoyalPolo; I wouldn't consider not being there at the end with any of my animals, in no different a way than there is no way I would not choose to be with a close family member if they were dying.

I have been with all of my animals at the end and for me it is non-negotiable.....however not everyone has the strength of character to do this. If the owner cannot give off good vibes and remain calm and in control with the animal at the end, then they are better off being out of the way. A blubbering wreck is of no help to anyone in this type of situation.

Everyone has to make this decision for themselves.

Comments like this will make people think different!! I love my horses more than anything but they will all go to the hunt unless I win the lottery!
He wouldn't be boxed up and traumatised as the hunt is local.

I would rather die in silence not someone blubbering in my face!!!!!!!!

RoyalPolo, have you tried to get insurance on a 34 year old. you know nothing about my horse or how much i value him. he is stressed at home spends most of his time walking around a small corner of the field. all he'll know is he going for a walk and that will be it. have you every tried keeping a 16hh horse as a pet that eat £30 a week in hard feed well that is what i've been doing for the last 6 years. at the end of the day he is being PTS for his own well being before he hurt himself or others as he is dangerous to be around. all i can say is i hope someone has a go at you when you have your horse PTS.

For what its worth Bramblebits i believe you are doing the right thing.Keep your chin up and dont let people get to you.

I dont know why you are all so quick to jump on the dont you know what its like band wagon? When you dont even know what i own! And i do know what its like to have horses as pets i have an old retired pony also ok his not 16hh but have also had a 15.2hh Qh as a pet and i dont currently ride my other pony so she is also a "pet" so yes i shuvel feed hay etc into them and get nothing back out of them riding wise but it does'nt bother me! and by the looks of it you have done good by yours also!

But my opinion stands that i wouldn't just drop my ponies of at the hunt kennels and leave i would itleast organise for someone they knew if they was able to cope better than me to stand with them.

Also its just as easy for someone with a gun to miss the horse being shot they can smell the hunt kennels a mile off as there sheds always stink like dead animal they fear things as im sure you know! Can you not have him pts by the hunts people at home then taken away?

And to Sophie221 - Would you not want your family with you when you died or would you not be with them to say the last goodbye? Surely horses are family not just machines?
