I am looking at buying a 2 year old and looking ahead to 18 months time or so when it comes to be broken would want to have this done professionally. I can do all the groundwork beforehand and the schooling afterwards but have never actually backed a horse before, roughly how much would this cost?

Average is normally about 120-150 a week to be sent away.
Normally 2-3 weeks away.

Really depends on horse and what youve done with them before. if you put loads of work in before you'll get away with less time away and save some pennies!

I have one away being backed at the moment. Price and timings are as above.
Daughter sat on him for the first time today :)

It depends where you send them and what you want!!
The place i know charges £150 a week (inc all feed hay straw grooming etc).
However they tend to like to do the starting as well, as they use a combination of natural horsemanship and traditional methods, to include desensitisation etc.
However if you are just looking for someone to do the bare bones of "breaking" that doesnt really take long so 2 -3 weeks is a good estimate.

I myself am not a fan of sending off just for the breaking bit as i feel its important for the whole experience to be consistant and im so fed up of seing horses with problems, like touching the ears or such.

But thats just me!

My boy is going away in April for 2-3 weeks and it's £130 a week (in Somerset). I have done everything up to the point of riding with him, but I do not think I am experienced or knowledged enough to teach him the initial steps of riding and as this is so important, he will be going to someone who can teach him correctly :)

It so depends on the horse and what has been done with it before - I've had one in that was only here 3 days, had been prepped brilliantly by the owner, was sat on and ridden away round the farm and in the arena. Then another, supposedly untouched 4yo which was here for months doing the groundwork before I passed it on to a friend to get on him, who is a lot "tougher" with them than I am (and younger!), which was what the horse needed at that point. I would budget around £1000 and then if you get away with £400 - £500 you'll be happy and if there are any problems you will already have the money in place :)
