Cost of Connies

OP I have sent you a message. Someone local to me has 3 4year old Connie geldings for sale 🙂

ETA proper babies are lovely and rewarding and the best thing ever. They can also be highly stressful and rack up some massive vets bills.

Dont buy a young connie that doesnt seem keen to jump for a teenager. Wait, esp as you have a couple of years. The right one will come up
Yes I am definitely not going for the mare, lovely as she is. The foal is a no go too really due to the time factor and risk factor!

Will keep an eye out, there is 5 days of Connemara sales this week at Clifden so will be interesting to see what they make, I have my favourites circled! Will have to sit on my hands! 🙌

There's another young Connie on Horsequest today - 15.2hh 4 year old gelding. This one looks sweet as well though a fair bit more money.
Thank you! Gosh the second one is absolutely beautiful 🤩 over our current budget alas…interesting seeing the prices yesterday at clifden, similar horses as that one (under saddle, 4yr olds) were making between €5000-7000, the dun ones obviously making more, a gorgeous dun was €9000 I think. I was actually quite surprised how cheap they were, I will be watching again today and see if it’s a similar price. Unbroken 3yr olds more like €3-5k. 2yr olds around €2-3k. Foals so cheap, €1500 average!

Seriously considering a trip to Ireland 😂 or using a horse agent over there to find something for us!

My current connie was a lovely steel grey, then dapple with dark points and he's now fleabitten! He's the best but I can't deal with a grey again 😅
🤣 yes I can only imagine I’ve only ever had chestnut or bay!

Love the greys but my goodness it is a lot of work isn’t it?!

Out of curiosity, as I have a pony for sale (not in the UK) and am not too sure about the price. What would you say that a 12 year old gelding, 148 cm, grey, not done too much officially before recently, is worth? He really has the best jumping technique that I have seen a horse with and a great attitude towards jumping. Hasn't been showed much, though. Has started national eventing with an acceptable result and could definitely go further there as well. Though he is a sensitive pony, not the kind you put an inexperienced rider on.

I am about to import a 3 year old 15hh Connie for 4k including transport/vetting. Does this sound about right? Prices are a minefield and vary so much.
Not based on the recent prices at the clifden sales, the prices were way down compared to what they were. 3yr olds going for between 3-8k euros, the Dun ones going for more. Sign of the times perhaps and winter prices. All age ranges were down, foals selling for as little as 700!

The quality was seriously down that’s why. Definitely not what it was earlier in the year. Anything that was nice still fetched enough money for a winter sale.
The problem is too many people breeding inferior ponies as not enough knowledge or thought put into production.

Unless someone is familiar with the market where you are there’s no point anyone in the UK answering really. What would be worth 10k here might be with 30k in Dubai or 3k in France. His conformation and the way he moves also needs to be shown.

I’ve just come back from a trip to Ireland sourcing my next youngster. After speaking to a few breeders I think part of the reason the price has went up is because the oversized ones are now quite in demand over the smaller ones. Gone are the days only children can ride them ! Now being 15.1/15.2 the breed has become a popular choice for teens coming off ponies or small adults wanting to relive their Connie childhood like me 🤣. In my opinion they’re one of the most versatile breeds very hardy, sure footed and most have a good pop. I have a 15.2 Connie boy my self and he’s fantastic if you ride him right, but he is the sporty type and quite sharp but will jump the world if I ask him too ! However this time I’ve mixed it up and imported a Connie x Warmblood to add to my Irish herd !
