What extras does everyone pay for on their livery yard?

On top of livery, i have to pay £5.00 a week for use of the electric lighting that doesnt include the use of the lights in the indoor school, thats £5.00 per half hour.

I don't pay 'extras', the outdoor arena is lit but we don't have to pay for the light, everything is included in the weekly livery price.

I think that the money you are paying for electricity is little short of extortion.

Livery is cheap for diy, but if u hire the indoor school it's £2, and to have horses caught/ turned out is £2.50, trailer parking is £20 a month (which I think is expeNsive)

I don't pay extras as the cost of facilities and lights, electric for clipping etc is included in my DIY. My yard is more expensive than others in my area but we have gallops, woods, tracks etc on site and 2 arenas with lights and lots of good off-road hacking very close. I pay £2 for a bring-in/turnout, £1.50 for a rug change.

I am on assisted DIY which is the minimum package the yard offers. Bring in or turnout with a rug change is included in the price as is use of the floodlit school, electric, toilet and soon horse walker. But to be honest I have previously always been on DIY and never had to pay extra for electric including school lights and horse walkers. I agree £5 for half an hour is extortionate!

I have to check but I think lights are £1 an hour and capped at £5 per week.
Hiring school to have a lesson is £5.
Hay-£25 a bale/£5 per small bale as and when you require it.
Stable or Shelter - £20 per week

£5 perhalf hour is insane!

I pay no extra for electrics, but if im ever caught leaving them on etc regularly our rent would go up understandably.
Im quite lucky on my yard, people help eachither out and keep costs down :)

we would charge someone 10 pounds per hr to use our school. In that cost is use of the school and cost of repair when the bulbs go as we have to get a scaffold built to rep[air them they are so high up and use of the jumps

Our indoor school lights all six of them are 1000 watts each min they are
horrendous powerful they have to warm up and are expensive to run .

I don't think £ 5 per half hour is too much . Does depend on what type of lights you have in the school.

Trouble is allot don't know the running costs of these lights and unless you are faced with a bill like we do it would seem expensive.

If you need the facility of lights then you have two options
pay and use
or do without.

I think the Op was saying they were charged for any electric. I have no problem with school lights being charged by time but add up the costings - 6kw will cost around 90p per hour so 50p per half hour is low - £1 - £1.50 per half hour not extortionate and more than this is starting to take the Mick. Remember that bulbs don't last forever and they cost money to install & replace. I say by the half hour as that would suit most peoples' (IME) usage needs.

I see your point but it does depend on the power of the lights. Ours are very expensive as they need to have enough rays down on ground surface so need to be 1000 watts.

We don't charge our liveries only outsiders who hire the school.

All depends on what lights are in the school as to working out the costing.. Our outdoor schools are 5000 watts so they are cheaper to run as they come on instantly also they do not need to warm up.

If this place does charge extra maybe they should invest in a timer system.

This way 2 liveries can use the school thus split the cost :)

Surely they aren't THAT expensive though? If three liverys used the school per day then that's £105 a week!! That's over £400 a month!? They can't need replacing that often or cost that much to run to merit that level of income?!

We used to have to pay for school lights at my old yard, except they were paid per horse. How two horses/people use more electricity than one if riding at the same time I have no idea. They were £5 per person/horse for half an hour which was a lot of money on top of livery and riding 3+ times a week and the lights didn't cover all of the school either.

Everything is included in my monthly livery. If you need the lights on in the school, put them on - no charge. If the school is free, you can go in there; someone else may come in - unless you really object ;). Bringing in, rugs on and off etc are all included.

I can only go on our lights as OP has not mentioned the type they have. But ours are expensive. As I said we don't charge for lighting as this is included. How ever that said we do get cross if people leave them on for more than 10 mins without a horse in there being schooled. Everyone knows you turn lights off as you come out.

Personally I think the lighting should be worked out and included into the livery bill or a meter set up. But outsiders have to pay use of school and lights as a package

My last yard the lights for the school were on a pay meter. You put 20p in but they were very temperamental so sometimes youd get 5 minutes, other times 2 hours! Ha ha x

Only extra I have is clipping and worming, yard is doing inteligent worming and for last two year I've only paid for tapeworm.
I am on part livery DIY sat and sun everything inc for £60 pw.
We have outside lights but no extra charge. The stable lights have all been done with low energy bulbs and some are quite dim. If we want brighter one we need buy it.

Gosh I am reading this thread thinking how lucky I am. I pay £20 a week for farm livery and we have a 20x40 school with a nice surface. I am one of only two liveries so I can go in the school whenever I want and I have had to share the school with YO only once in over a year that I have been there. The lights aren't working at the moment but it's ok to ride with the streetlights from the road and when they are fixed, which will be soon, I on't have to pay anything to use them. It is expected that I will turn them off immediately I leave the school which is fair enough.
YO sometimes brings my pony in for me or feeds her and doesn't charge. I say please and thank you and help out where I can and buy chocolates where I think of it, but that's about it.
I have turnout with one other pony and I get to rearrange the electric fencing exactly as I like it. YO charges the battery for me and after I do poo picking the farmer is kind enough to empty the wheelbarrow by putting it in the tractor because now it is too muddy to push it up the hill from the field to the muck heap. Reading this thread has made me really rather grateful for my livery. Honestly, the only extra they charge me for is hay! Chocolates for them this week I think!
