Hi everyone

How much would you expect to pay for fencing?

I’d like to use this sort of thing:

I’d estimate 4000 feet / 1200m of fencing required.

I would be paying a local farmer for the work. Does anyone have a time and materials type estimation?

I would prefer to pay fairly, so I’m not looking for a good deal at the farmers expense.

Your local agricultural merchants, or timber merchants will be able to price the fencing. Remember you need bigger posts to hang and close gates to and the gates and hinges & fastners etc, ONLY GET PRICES FOR TANALISED PRESSURE TREATED TIMBER. Rails are usually 3:6 mtrs long, so on my reconing (check it yourself)for 3 lots of rails you need1000 rails less gate area, and 166 posts at1:8mtrs giving 1:1 mtrs approx top rail height. Less gate area. Gate posts want to be 225 x 225, fence posts 75 x75 or 100 x75, rails 75 x50 or 100 x 50. Are you setting the posts in concrete or in the ground? Plus loads of nails put in on an angle. It all adds up. Ouch.

I am going to be doing some once I move and am allowing up to £20 per metre factoring in several gates and some clearance work to find parts of the boundary, luckily nowhere near as much as you although I have not yet worked out how much is required as now I cannot go back as I had planned to.

We've just a load of fencing done. I think it was £16/m for post and three rail like you've posted, but we decided to go for post and two rails at 10.50/m because we've only got little ponies! Gates on top, but we reused most of ours. FWIW the guy said he quotes by just doubling the cost of the materials (he came with two other men and some serious machinery and did 200m in one day)

My local agriculture merchants have just quoted me the following prices.1:8 x75 x75 posts £3:86 . 1:8 posts125 x75 £6:00. 3:6mtr 90 x 40 rails £3:65. 3:6 mtr x 100 x 50 rails £5:50. Gate posts 2:1mtr x150 x150 £19: 75. Gate post 2:1×200×200 £32:50 Gates in timber 3:6 mtrs £89:00. ALL PLUS VAT. For 90 ×40 rails £3,650. For 75 x75 posts £639. 2x 2:1× 150 x150 gateposts plus 3:6 mtr timber gate £217. Gives a total of £4,506 plus vat +nails and gate fittings etc. (Doule check my maths). recon thats less than £4 mtr for materials. Plus vat.

It’s this piece of land;

I’m planning to fence three sides, and then putting a line of electric between wooden posts down in front of the building. I’ll use electric to section off internally.

Does that look sensible?
