I paid £130 for the vet to pts by injection for one in Feb and one in January by the hunt who also disposed £180 including vat
What a crap start to the year that was :'(
Local knackerman charges £90 pts and disposal is free if you are happy for the carcass to be lion food at local zoo or its another £150 basic disposal by mass cremation, individual is more and return of ashes even more again. Personally I have always gone for the zoo option, I like to think of it as a more natural disposal.
I've had a quote from a nearby 'slaughterhouse' (assume their same as the term 'knackerman') who has quoted considerably less - to pts and dispose is £80-100....bit sceptical as so much cheaper...
Why be sceptical? Round here the knackerman charges £90 to shoot and take away, I guess the carcasses are rendered down for whatever product they make. They take anything regardless of medication so it's not for any food chain. I just take a strand of tail - they're very much an empty shell by then.
My thinking is that they pts far more animals every day than any vet or even hunt, so they are the most likely to get it right. I certainly cannot fault them so far. Vet-wise the last one charged £150, made a pig's ear of it (understatement) and then I had to pay the knackerman £90 to take her away anyway....
Hunts have to be licensed as waste carriers and have safe disposal facilities to take the body away, so some hunts have decided its just not worth it. Some hunts will do it at the kennels and dispose of the body.
Try, http://www.nfsco.co.uk/
Our local chap charged £150 + VAT, which meant £180 and that included disposal, to the kennels. Could have had individual or joint cremation if wanted, at extra cost.
It was incredibly quick, pony had a mouthful of grass, man was extremely kind and wanted everything to be as stress free for everyone, pony, pony's friends and me.
