Afternoon all :)

Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it costs to have bloods tested? We think Barry might have slight arthritis in his hock, he's only 9 and passed a 5 stage vetting in April. I'm now wondering whether he was on something when I tried him out, or whether it could have developed in that time (problem first came apparent about 6 weeks ago). Obviously 6 months from April is...now, so I'm running out of time to sort out getting it tested, and I'm in Italy next week so that slows things down. I did a quick google and it came up with £150-200, is that about right?

I'm not sure what I'd do if it came back positive for something, as I'm not very good at being angry ad disapproving (unless I'm in the mood :p) so I'm not sure whether to go for it or not. Especially if it is that much money!

Ta :)

I don't know if it's more expensive because they've had to hold the bloods for so long but I always pay around £70 in lab fees when I have had blood tests done.

Not sure if that's much help sorry, you're probably better to phone the vets that did the vetting to ask for a price :)

I think it can be expensive as they have to look for so many things, it is not just a routine blood test, you would need to have some idea of what he may have been given, if just bute that is probably easy enough but it could be steroids, it may be that he was on something like devils claw or no bute which are not going to show, unless I was certain and going to act on the findings I would save the money and use it for any treatment he may require.
The fact that nothing showed at vetting could be that there was nothing at that time, flexion tests should show up any pain but often once walked around the stiffness wears off so it may be that he was turned out before vetting, rather than stabled, or given a lunge before the vet arrived to loosen him up or that it really has just come on, it has to start at some point, and that you have been unlucky with the timing.
Some xrays will show you the extent of the changes and this will give you more idea of how long they have been there and how quickly he is deteriorating, hopefully it is just minor and he will be fine.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I won't bother with it. He was stabled when I turned up for the vetting and she mentioned (without me asking) that he'd been brought in in the morning.

I probably have just been unlucky with the timing, I hope so at least! he's not lame as such, just started being not quite right as such in the school a few weeks ago. So hopefully with a bit more investigation we will be able to get back in the school (just hacking atm) and get going again :)
