.....I'm getting a pup shortly, and just thinking about the costs it involves - haven't had a dog since I lived at home, and then the bank of mum and dad paid for it!

Will be a medium/large dog.

Costs I'm factoring in are insurance, vaccinations, worming, vet checks, 'tack' (leads, collars etc), food and potentially grooming/clipping.
Costs I don't need to think about are holiday cover (will stay with parents) or anyone to walk it during the day, as it will be with OH.

Can anyone give me a rough estimation on what they spend per week/month/year on their dogs? Just want to factor it into the budget!

Thanks

My dog is a Jack Russell and I spend the following:

£9 per month on pet insurance
£20 per year on vaccinations
£10 year on worming
£5 per week on food

I havent taken anything else into account as these are the basics.

Bumble Dog - or should I say Princess Bumble Dog!!!

So far this year in excess of £3,000 vets bills (thank goodness for pet insurance)
Food - stirloin steak daily with her medication £3 per week
Vacinations £150+ (included rabies booster)
Overseas travel - last year 4 trips@ £30 for the ferry and £35 vet visit = £260.00

So if you want an inexpensive dog, don't get a Bumble Dog!!!!!

Too much......see all my piccies I have loads

COSTS FOR A GIANT BREED (84KG)

Insurance per month £37
wormer every three months £20
flea treatment (Frontline) every 2 months but every month in tick season £15-20
annual M.O.T and booster jabs £40
Vet consultation in hours £26
vet consultation out of hours (emergency) £90

Harness for large dog £10
lead home made from climbing rope free
collar £5
collar show from Spain hand made...a lot more but not essential)
grooming kit £40 we groom him ourselves.
food every 3 weeks a sack of Pero gold £15
cheap tinned dog food per week £5
treats....a lot more but non essential
Diesel to take him for walks per week £20 (we live in the country and require a car to vary his walks) again this will be totally adjustable, just trying to think of every expense
that's all I can think of at the moment....Ours also has a £60 tub of Synoquin for arthritis every 3 weeks plus acupuncture but again yours won't need this yet.

2 Whippets I have come to (i'm not going to like this

)

£20 p/month each insurance
£6 p/week tinned food (butchers adult and butchers puppy 1 tin per day)
£6 p/week dried food (1 bag field and trial puppy food)
£40 ish p/year on Frontline for both
£15 per year ish on Drontal for both
£10 p/month on various chews so the puppy doesn't eat the house while I'm at work LOL
£40 p/year each on booster vacs

Actually that isn't too bad really. Mine are pretty easy keeping dogs as long as they don't injure themselves out rabbiting LOL

I have a Boston Terrier and she costs:

$8 for food per week
$4 for quality dog biscuits (last a fortnight)
$30 for a day of "doggie daycare" if I'm too busy at work (usually just once a week)

Her annual vet check is $150 (including rabies shot and bordatella).

Erm, that's about it.

Intermittently, I'll buy her a toy, bones, or a winter coat, but that's it. We don't have pet insurance because, in the US at least, it's a big fat con.

I made sure to go to a breeder who health tests for CERF, BAER and OFA patellas (conditions that affect BTs the most) and so she has turned out to be nice and healthy (touch wood). Whatever breed you choose, I would strongly advise you do the same (especially hips for a larger dog).
