Due to being at University I'm unable to own a horse, but would like to own one for the 4 months I have off during the summer. Could anyone please explain the usual costs involved?

All livery, shoeing, insurance, vet, dentist - only difference is that you don't own the horse/pony.

I can get DIY liver for £10 a week from a good friend, andcit is only 5 minutes drive away. I'm actually looking to loan a polo pony, but I have no idea of where to start.

I doubt if many people would want to loan a horse to you for the summer.
That is the time when people actually have the time for their horses and they are fairly cheap to keep.
If I was looking for a loaner I would want someone to take it for at least 12 months, not just the best bit.
You might get lucky but I doubt it.
Why not try for a share, it would be cheaper and someone might agree to it if they are going off on holiday etc.

It's just too expensive to play polo without your own pony, plus I'd be able to ride for at least 2 hours a day/5 days a week.

I didn't realise you wanted a specialist competition horse.
In that case I dont think you will get a free loan, people will want to compete themselves in the summer.
You would probably have to lease one. In that case you would have the lease to pay in addition to the horses keep, shoeing, vet etc etc.

I've actually done summer loans a couple of times, it worked out well for me. Start advertising ASAP so you can give yourself a decent chance to find something!
