Cost of making haylage

I have a 10 acre field that we produce big round bale haylage from. It cost around £11 per bale from start to finish and I get around 83 bales off one cut. I can sell each bale at £25 as it is superb quality and my liveries usually buy it.

Prices will be higher this year as the wrap is a by product of the petroleum industry, I believe.

yeah my farmer has said that everything si going up in price due to the cost in fuel etc, plus wrap, but got no price on how much it will cost for our field to be cut etc

What size big bales! our field is 10 acres with very good thick lush grass and it only ever produces between 82 - 90 big round bales, these bales feed 8 horses for 6 days per bale. We obviously wrap ours and then it is stacked in the corner of the field and used as and when. You wrap it to how long you want it to last, we wrap enough covering to last 2yrs but you can go up to max of 4yrs covering but you need to leave rat poison in pipes around the bottom of the stack.

The cost of making haylage has gone up approx 20% from 12 months ago.
This is because wrap has gone up by 25-30% and red diesel for tractors is now costing 70p/litre compared with 32p last year.

That is not taking into account that the farmer needs to make a little bit more for himself as his food, heating etc has gone up just the same as everyone else's.

I know it is not good news but hopefully you will understand that is is not someone trying to rip you off.
