Others have given good breakdowns of cost, mine is similar. I also use Anthony evans, like many insurers they sub out the insurance (they are a broker) but the contract is with them. I’ve used them for about 15 years, have had claims/breakdowns, and they have been great.

Another factor is the hassle of collecting and dropping off hire boxes which if you are lucky might be half an hour away, or more. It’s lovely to have it sitting here (with much of my competition stuff stored inside) ready to go.

As others have said, fuel on this size box is very economical compared with a bigger lorry, and it’s wonderful to have a normal mot - parts are cheap too on the standard van makes (Renault, Vauxhall etc). Hope you enjoy it.

Just reading this thread as am getting a 3.5 ton lorry on trial next week, 're insurance, I noticed Vermillion said hers was any driver over 23, is that standard on these policies ?
Would be nice if my friend could also take pony out for me
I use Anthony Evans - they price matched someone else. I thought over 25 for standard

I have NFU insurance which provides breakdown cover. I broke down in the motorway and the service was excellent and very prompt. The 'horse rescue' was an independent provider who the breakdown insurance use so I guess that in different areas different services will be used.
