I'm thinking of having my horse scoped for ulcers. I'm just wondering if someone could give me a rough idea of cost if he does need to be treated please? I know it will vary depending on treatment given and how long for but I'm not insured so would just like a rough idea of what I might be in for.

My boy had 4 weeks of peptizole followed by two weeks at a reduced dose. The full dose for him for the four weeks was about £360. The second scope was £150. I think the final two weeks was about £120. I got the initial scope free otherwise that would have been another £150

The scope is relatively inexpensive compared to the treatment if positive for ulcers. I paid £120 for my scope (last year) plus the visit cost. The treatment omeprazole is roughly £40-60 per syringe depending on your vet and you’ll need it once a day usually for a month. Most vets advise sulfracate treatment as well I paid £90 for the tub which lasted over a month.

Last August, cost of scope and sedation = £290. 1 box gastroguard (x14 doses) = £329 (horse had 2 boxes at full dose, and 1 box tapering the dose down)

The last time i had a months worth of omeprazole and Sucralfate it was around 800-850. This was 2019 so id imagine it has gone up

Thanks all, that's really helpful and sounds like it won't be too expensive so long as they're quite straightforward to treat. I've had a quick look at prices online and will definitely be getting a prescription and doing it that way if he does need treatment as it seems like that will be a lot cheaper than the prices the vets charge to get it from them! My vets are quite pricey now compared to others too so I'll be expecting anything form them to be at the upper end of the prices suggested here.

You could also consider omeprazole injections weekly which weren’t a thing really when I was treating ulcers years ago. I’m not sure how they compare on cost, but have heard that there’s no need to taper down since the injection wears off at the end?

We paid a bit extra when we had one of ours scoped as he stayed the night before at the vets. I really didn’t want to transport an angry hungry horse to the vets first thing in the morning!

As far as I remember 18 months ago the TOTAL cost of F’s treatment was about £2500
It included
1 scope at reduced price with 2 vets and a computer person
1 scope at home with vet and vet assistant,
4 full omeprazole jabs,
2 half jabs, all jabs with pony taken to vets so no visit fees
2 tubs of Sucralfate,
6 months of N.A.F. GastriAid ( vet recommended)
plus alteration to feeding etc

That sounds too cheap? 4 weeks of 500kg horse of peptizole at only £360?

One on our yard has just been through a successful course of treatment. She had the first scope, 4 weekly omeprazole injections and another scope. She's now on several months of medication which is to wean her off the omeprazole plus she'll have tubes of it in high stress situations (depending on the cause of course). She is insured. Not sure of cost but owner said over 2k so far x

Sounds similar to mine.
I forgot to add the price of the box of ‘emergency’ omeprazole for extra stressful situations

If going for a prescription remember that Peptizole is the same drug as Gastroguard and last I knew a bit cheaper. So get your vet to prescribe omeprazole or Peptizole, not Gastroguard.

Our vets generally give omperazole injections once weekly as find works better than oral omeprazole.
It's normally 4 injections sometimes 6 if not fully healed at rescope.
Dependant on type(s) of ulcers Surcralfate maybe needed aswell.
All in all normally looking at £2500ish including initial scope treatment and repeat scope
