How much are people paying for 5 stage vetting with Xrays? Am gobsmacked that bloods are not taken as routine by some vet practices for a 5 stage....

Are you sure this is true, there is a standard section on the form to record that blood has been taken. As mentioned above it is just stored not routinely tested unless an issue comes up later. In the midlands I have been quoted/charged £450-£500 for 5 stage by different practices.

I wanted xrays of neck and back which then cost about £400 on top, I was only going to xray joints if there were any concerns due to flexion tests etc. Some practices would only do this at their own clinic, some would not do the neck at all due to difficulties with interpretation and some would take them but would send them back to the clinic for interpretation by an expert so would not be able to confirm on the day if everything was OK. I think leg joints are more straight forward.

I paid around 1k for vetting with X rays a year ago. Included stifle, hocks, hooves and coffin joints and blood was taken.

This was with my vet and it was local so he only had to travel 30 minutes. X rays done on site.

yep - it's an additional £80 for one practice to take bloods too despite a 5 stage vetting... I won't be using them...
Am thinking back, hock & stifle xrays - undecided on feet...

We price the bloods and vetting as separate items a) because the RCVS ask us to charge everything separately to increase transparency for clients, and b) because despite our recommendations and preference as vets we have a moderate (and seemingly increasing) number of clients for vettings who absolutely do not want bloods to be taken.

It would seem we can't win!

For the record the purchase price of the blood kit (the one we have to use for legal reasons), plus the cost of the 6 month lab storage, plus VAT, would come close to the £80 you have been quoted.

Our RDA group paid just over £400 for a 5 stage with bloods taken, no x-rays. A different practice told us that they routinely take bloods for a 2 stage (different horse).
