My dads in but of a state. He is probably having his old spaniel pts and is worried about the cost.
I can’t for the life of me think what I last paid but it’s not as much as my mums google searches are throwing up.
Then what are the options afterwards, the cheaper options?
I’d never really thought of it but the average older person with a tiny back garden can’t just bury a medium sized dog so what happens after?

I ‘think’ it cost us around £275 for our big Shitsu to pts and cremated last September. It was certainly not much more than that. His ashes came back in a beautiful box.

But best to ring the vet for a better idea of their costs and services xx

My old girl was pts 3 years ago just after lockdown. It was done at home in the garden and she was cremated afterwards with having ashes back. From memory it cost about £420. It will be cheaper if you have done at vets and no ashes back.
She was a GSD.

when we had Jezza put to sleep at the beginning of Feb it was £149 including a communal cremation (no ashes back) and a memory box (a couple of paw prints, some hair in a vial and his collar preserved in resin). the cremation was only about £40 of that and the memory box was £20 ish.

ETA he was a 23 kg beagle

When I had my last lurcher PTS I got the vet to come to my cottage as she hated the vets.. it cost about £250 and I didn’t have the ashes back. I never do as they are in my heart forever and I don’t want or need the ashes.. we are all different and it depends on what your Dad wants..

£145 in late 2021.

This was for a 17kg whippet with no ashes back. I thought this was very reasonable.

Approx price in this area for a dog under 25kg is £150 euthanasia, £150 communal cremation with no ashes returned, £250 private cremation with ashes returned - plus casket cost if you wanted anything beyond their standard scatter tube. House visit additional £50.

I’m sorry your dad is in this situation 🙁 As you see it varies so widely that it’d be best to contact the vet and/or a private crematorium direct for an estimate.

Thanks, they can of course ring but I think it’s one of those slightly awkward questions to ask, it’s not but feels it I guess, he doesn’t even want to ring them at all. I just really couldn’t remember even roughly

I did email our vet to ask the price , which they replied to with the price, but when I tried to make an appointment via email, they said I had to ring.
They had some info about end of life stuff on their website too

I don’t think it’s awkward at all. And knowing can make decisions easier rather than having to decide on the day (especially if the individual cremation is very expensive).

Could you phone for them?

Quite a wide range of cost !
I think when we had our previous terrier PTS, I left her there (it was the start of covid ) and they arranged it all, I think it was about £350. Different vet

Border Collie pts at home was roughly around £125. We buried her at home.

The other options are cremated individually & ashes returned to you or cremated with others and no return. Best to contact your own vet for costs as they vary significantly. As someone else said, maybe you could call for your dad x. Sorry he’s having to face this decision soon 😔

It’s not so much the cremation thing tbh.
That was more my question because it’s not really occurred to me what happens to a dogs body if the owner can’t afford to cremate or can’t bury them.

Yes i can call for them, I was a bit flat out when they were messaging earlier.
He just wanted to know the basic euthanasia cost.

I had a vet come to the house to have Lottie PTS just over a year ago. She was around 34kg and it cost just over £300. I did not want any ashes back.
My own vet was around £100 cheaper in the surgery, but the extra cost was worth it to me.

I paid £100 at the vets and then buried him at home, you don’t need a big garden, mine is small but I’ve got two dogs buried here and I’ve planted ferns where they are in the hope that owners in the future don’t ever dig them up. I think it’s good to bring them home to bury that but if I couldn’t I would bury them elsewhere, I wouldn’t leave them at the vets. I’ve seen what happens afterwards and it’s better to know where they are in my opinion.

Well I wish I hadn’t read that.

It’s just a body so as far as I am concerned it’s not my dog anymore but I don’t want to see or know what happens to it afterwards, as long as the dog has passed away in my arms that’s the most important thing to me.. same as horses, I have never watched them being loaded afterwards , it would keep playing in my mind if I did..
