Cost to tack you first horse???

Just wondering how much people think it may cost to fully tack a horse from nothing.

By this I mean bridle, bit, saddle, rugs, tack box and items and other things that you think could creep in.

I know that it's a 'piece of string question' but ..... out of interest
 
I spent about £700 on my pony but that included a very basic synthetic saddle. That bought:

Saddle, girth - new
Stirrups and leathers - secondhand
One new bridle
One secondhand bridle
New bits and reins for both bridles
Full grooming kit and box
3 x turnout rugs
1 x stable rug
1 x Thermatex
Brushing boots
Knee boots
Lunge cavesson and lunge rein
Hay bags/buckets/tub trugs etc
Fleece bandages
Headcollars x 3 and lead ropes

I spent a lot more since on more rugs and various bits and pieces probably amounting to £200 then I've also spent £300+ on sweet itch rugs!

Plus lotions and potions and supplements

Not my first horse but starting again from scratch:

Saddle:1400 (new)
Girth:15 (new)
Leathers and irons 100 (new)
Saddle cloth 30 (new)
Martingale and stops 15 (new)
Bridle:38 (2nd hand)
Bling browband :o 42 (eBay bnib)
Various bits then hackamore: (96 some on trial, new and 2nd hand)
Rugs: no fill turnout (new), Rambo wug plus (2nd hand), cooler (new) £110
Boots inc travel: 92 (sales, 2nd hand and new).
Head collar: 14
Poll guard: 8
Tail guard: 8

I'm sure that's not all I've spent. Everything bargain hunted except the saddle, believe it or not :o

Other pony is a native and much cheaper to kit out.

She came with a head collar so she was:

Saddle 60 (2nd hand synthetic but had no wear anywhere, looks brand new).
Bridle 28 (new)
Girth 22 (new)
Had leathers and stirrups.
Prolite adjustable pad and girth sleeve £80 (new)
No fill turnout 50 (new)
Brushes 10 (new)

I have ordered my saddle for 725 quid, ouch, it is leather and adjustable (hence why not many available second hand) but other than than I've probably spent about 150 quid, you don't need millions of rugs! Saddle will always be the big cost!

Didn't buy the rugs all at once but these are what I consider essentials (I've spent a few hundred odd on unimportant stuff since) I bargain hunted on the net for most rugs, boots etc and waited for sales. I actually thought I'd spent a lot more so working it all out has been interesting!
 
Oh gosh! Thousands! If I added up all the costs for all the horses over all the years, I could probably retire on it. Take my advice: don't count!

haha ^ this! I've justified everything for my new lad by telling myself that it's just replacing the too small ones from the old girl that I sold but truth is it comes nowhere near and I haven't even brought it all new.

Reckon the basics must have been around £1500 but straight away there's been the nice to have extras and I only have a GP saddle but really neeeeeed a dressage saddle too:p
 
I only have a share horse at the moment (very early days) but im kinda collecting as i go along. Now i obviously wont be buying a bargain saddle and then finding a horse to fit it but i know it will be a horse of a certain ish size so head collars, lunge equipment, lead ropes and potentially on Monday a lovely 2nd hand full bridle .. I think if you see a bargain that can be 'universal' then grab it whilst you can :p

I think I did pretty well I paid an extra £250 on top of the price of the horse for:
Leather Saddle
Numnah
Leather Bridle
Bit
Girth
Stirrups
2x stable rugs
2 x turn outs
1x fleece
2x stable mats
2x headcollars and a leadrope
Set of travel boots

Then I didn't need too much. Spent about £30 on boots, bought a couple of buckets, a new headcollar and leadrope.

We already had a few things like stirrup leathers, grooming brushes, etc. There were other things that we bought later like a lightweight turnout, saddle cloth, martingale, mucking out tools etc.
 
Good idea Antw, that's what I did just bought things in full size when I saw them and hoped I'd be able to use them on future horses, turns out my 15hh haffy is the same rug size as the 16.3 TB I used to loan (and a much bigger head!) which is super handy as I acquired some bargains off facebook groups at the time!

If you don't mind cheap brands and are bit fussed about colours, you can do it for 300 pounds. Saddle, stirrups, girth, numnah, bridle, bit, reins, headcollar, leadrope, 2 turnout rugs, water bucket, feed bucket, haynet, grooming kit. Depends how much you want to spend really. People generally end up buying loads of things they don't really need, or items in a more luxurious version than necessary, just because they want to.

so quite cheap but saddle is naff and have to get new one!!

people are right though, preloved and ebay is the way to go :)

I was starting from scratch due to break in ownership and it cost a fortune especially as I got him fully clipped in depths of winter. Well over £2000 but this included literally everything e.g buckets, grooming kit, haynets, travel gear, lunging gear, wardrobe of rugs, brushing boots, saddle, bridle, lead rope etc. Didn't help that literally only one saddle fitted and couldn't get it secondhand.

Rugs were expensive but wanted Horseware as they are a good fit for him and last for ages.

Didn't have time to buy second hand either as found him quicker than expected!
 
I think it can be done a lot cheaper than that. Especially if you are going to a yard where own tools, barrow, first aid kit aren't required. Even forgetting second hand, lots of basics can be bought cheap. Eg buckets from Asda, tool box (rather than grooming kit box) from Wilkinsons, old wooden spoon from home, rather than a few quid for some silly feed stirrer, plastic bins from Wilkinsons, etc.

My first horse I paid for myself luckily fitted in my old ponies stuff so mum just gifted it all to me however the others were about 1k each to kit out !
 
Enough, but as around for good 2nd hand first, because you enevitably buy something then decide you wanted something else, so you end up like me with enough used only once tack items.

I agree - rarely buy any of these bits from a tack shop; I really struggle with the idea of buying a special plastic feed stirrer :rolleyes:
 
I don't know, not very much! All second hand/hand me downs. Or bits and pieces that OH has acquired in return for fixing fences, stable doors etc.
