OK OK OK Soooo I have found assisted DIY HURRAH!

Although it is only temporary at the moment boooooooo as my Dad's friend is getting a yard (YAY!) And he will go there as soon as the yard is ready as it is closer to home....though this could me MONTHS yet!

I was wondering your spend per month on things such as feed, bedding and hay - how much should I budget for?

I would like to keep him on easybed or shavings, and feed haylage.

rent - 140
insurance - 40

I budget about 350 a month inc. rent and that usually gives me enough to buy the odd extras needed eg. the odd replacement rug/fly spray hoof oil etc.

Ive just gone from shavings to straw, is there a reason you cannot do that? it is so much cheaper, or try aubiose, initial outlay alot but very absorbent and time saving. That £350 a month quote shocked me too, I dont spend that much at all and I am DIY...
 
£10 a month for a wormer, do you worm every month???? Just surprised me to see that?

Anyway my costs are per calender month

Livery £108
Hay £20 pm (Very big Long bales)
Shavings 3 x £5.50 = £16.50
Wormers 4-5 a year pending programme £50-£60 a year, bought in bulk to reduce costs and shared between all liveries.

Farrier £58.75 (with stud holes £66.75)
Feed and supplemets not sure around £25 - £30

Insurnce ... dunno my partner sees to that

Including insurance I'd say around £300 per calender month maybe a little more. That does not include extra's such as rugs etc.
 
3 bales of shavings per month? Wow. I use 5 a week (per horse!!). I am so not telling my dad that other people can manage on 3 a month!!!
 
Nope. I just can't be bothered sorting through it when I have to muck out so end up throwing half the clean - it isn't exactly the tidiest horse either. Also have banks as high as my knees and big stable's......... that is all!
I am abit OCD about the shavings actually - if they don't look brand new they have to go, beds always have to look like they are brand new.

I didn't add flu and tet jabs, or dentistry and I also have the osteopath and physio min twice a year, vet fees .... the list never seems to stop....

if you wanna get rich don't buy a horse lol wanna have fun, buy a horse....
