Costs of breeding

don't forget to factor in keeping the foal for four years too! I also forgot the £75 additional insurance for pregnancy and foaling for the mare (ordinary insurance doesn't cover pregnancy and foaling . . . )

oo forgot to include that insurance fee in my sums too!!!

Well the first foal cost me £3500 to get the foal on the ground! This was due to two failed cycles and a uterine infection the insurance wouldnt cover. Went to repro vets and got straight in foal. The result is a top class yearling who I really couldnt buy- particularly now.

Second time it cost £1200 in total, the stud fee was 915 euros inc transport- took first time with the same repro vets. I dont include livery as she lives at stud now anyway- so would still be paying it!

At the time the first foal seemed alot of money to get her, and i really wondered why am I doing this? Now things have changed and the foal is definately worth every penny and tear I have shed!

Thanks for the link too!

i really dont want another bay horse so my options are to either breed from a proven coloured.... or a cremello etc (which i dont want at all as it limits my options)!

so coloured it is. :)

Noodle..you have to DNA colour test your mare first before you can hope for a certain colour......she is bay, so you know one of her base colours is black for sure (they have two base colour genes) if the other base colour gene is also black you will never get a chesnut foal no matter what stallion you put her to. If it is 'red' you may get a chesnut foal. The bay in her is caused by the agouti gene..if she has two agouti genes (homozygous) then she will always pass the bay gene and won't have a black foal either.

So you need to get her tested for the Red (e) gene and the Agouti (A) gene.
If you know one of her parents is a chesnut then you won't have to test for the red gene because she will definitely carry one black and one red in that case :)

Then you have to find out what genes the stallion carries...but find out what your mares colour DNA is first :)
