Costs of running a horsebox

I'm considering getting a horsebox next year, and I was just wondering, how much should I expect to spend on it? Roughly how much will the tax be? Would it be cheaper getting a 4X4 and trailer? I currently have a little corsa so I don't spend a lot on petrol.

I think my tax is £165 a year for my 7.5t. It's the plating that costs. I have it serviced and plated and it's always around £1,000, even when it goes straight through. I has to replace to tyres this year that was £350, although it was an emergency. My insurance is around £400 per year also.

I currently have a 4x4 and trailer but don't have to commute to work at the moment - I get a lift instead. However, I will soon be commuting to work so I've bought a Fiesta and will be getting a small (3.5t) lorry for my horse.

What with the price of fuel, its will work out cheaper to run a lorry and a very small car!

I've got a 6ton lorry and it costs £165 for 12 months tax, £49 for MOT test and then servicing once a year - usally about £300.00 plus repairs/tyres on top when needed and of course insurance about £350-£400

when i had a lorry i used to recon £1000 minimum just to be road legal & safe , that covered
rfl
insurance
breakdown cover
mot
but would be more if any repairs needed

so that was £20 a week at least before we went anywhere, ie fuel or i added in depreciation on the lorry

i now run a 4X4 & ifor 505 , as i only do about 6000 miles per year in total in my car it defintely works out cheaper & i've never yet been in a position where the car doesn't start on a cold winter morning & you have to jump start it

plating, PLATING, plating!!!

Mine is in today for pre plating checks, you are looking at a good £1k for plating and servicing if your lorry is of any age.... some are lucky but he majority of older boxes always need a bit of help!

Insurance around £200 tops including breakdown cover...

Fuel - lorry is cheaper than 4x4 depending on how many miles you do in a car normally...

My 7.5t costs £165 to tax and ins is about £280 with breakdown.
Mine is an H reg so quite old but last year cost me £48 for the plate to be done and £45 for a new king pin before the plate.
I have the advantage that OH does all the work on mine so dont have to pay labour costs.
It is much the same on fuel as our discovery when i used that for towing.
