Hi all. I am another one joining the bandwagon and would absolutely love to take my horse hunting for a day - he would adore it (was brought up in the field) and I think it would do us both good to get out and about.

But... how do I get to go? I can't really afford to pay very much, don't know anyone that hunts, and am not in Pony Club (I'm 31!). I'd ideally love to go to a meet near our yard and just enjoy the day with the hunt - without jumping anything too large or scary! Am I deluded or is there a way I can do this?

My local hunt is the Cotswold, but the VWH are also nearby. Any ideas?!

Hi,
Most hunts offer a newcomers cap for the first and second times out. Weekdays are cheaper than saturdays ;-)
If you ring the secretary then they will advise you of a suitable first meet and will find you someone to hang with during the day. You could also ask on here for a buddy!Unfortunately i am too far but am always happy to escort a newbie and have met some lovely HHo people on the field :-)

Also worth asking if they have any newcomers' days planned. These generally offer a chance for all the newbies to come to one gentle meet, with plenty of experienced 'buddies' on hand to assist and guide you through. They are usually cut price caps or even free depending on the hunt.

Thanks for your suggestion Dex - I spoke to the secretary and she was very happy to welcome me along for a day's hunting! She suggested several days and routes that she thought would suit me and Henry, and gave me a discounted price as a trial day out. She also helpfully mentioned suitable attire and suggested tying a green ribbon in Henry's tail to warn people I was new. SO hopefully I will be going one week day in March when there is a meet closer to my yard! Can't wait!
