Roughly 2 months ago our yard got quarantined as a number of horses had a virus - varied from those with thick yellow mucus from their noses to coughing. My boy coughed only under exercise trot or faster & has white/clear nose discharge so had it mildly in comparison, also lethargic & not his cheeky self.

Vet came out took nasal swabs & bloods, none running temps. Came back clear no stranges, no herpes just a "respiratory infection". Quarantine lifted.

My boy had up until just over a week ago off work totally to play it safe, never went off his food had 2 lots of Norodine courses each being a sachet a day for 5 days (he had second course as vet said he should as he still had slight discharge).

Last week we hacked out & schooled - nothing really that would push him just taking it easy due to 6 weeks ish off work. No coughing at all. Then last week he coughed, only once, after trotting on a hack - I put it down as an odd cough. Today he coughed on several occasions on our hack! He also seems slightly more sluggish towards his work since this virus & gets tired quicker (never been the most forward though.)

He's a 7yr old Section D, out 24/7 so away from dust, he's had 6 weeks off in total - a full 4 after the antibiotics finished. No discharge, back to his chirpy self. Read today about RAO? After effect of having a virus by the sounds & sounds like what he would have due to cough. Would a supplement such as NAF 5* Respirator Boost help shift the cough?

I'm worried so much the cough will only get worse or he can't shift it. Suspect vet would just chuck me a load of norodine again & suggest rest. Worries me as he never ever used to cough at all before this so thinking supplement may shift the cough or at least help by clearing/soothing throat. Anymore supplements out there? It's a dry cough btw not productive.

Thanks!

My old cob was left with a cough/RAO after a virus. I fed him on haylage (wont affect you as out 24/7) and gave him the global herbs respiratory suppliment which was about the only one that seemed to have any effect. I wouldnt worry too much on the suppliment he passed a 5 stage vetting! :)

Fab thankyou! How long did you use it for until it had an effect/he stopped coughing? Also is it a long or short term thing?

Gutted as he seems himself in every way now bar a bit sluggy but then that maybe due to his breathing. Don't want to risk damaging him if he starts coughing regularly.
