I'm getting worried for my youngster, i have had him 3 months almost, he is almost 9 months old. He is very backwards as his mum ran out of milk so weaned early and as a result it seems his immune system has taken a hit.

He has runny eyes, a snotty nose, and a cough, i have him rugged up 24/7 and he is a fluffy section c foal with enough fluff you can loose your hand under it. But this is concerning me. Hes as lively as ever, checky as you like (bites your bum whinnies and canters off)

I have been told theres nothing vets can do for him and he will get over it him self but he has had this since i bought him of the stud in wales. Is there really nothing we can do to help him over this? do ponies have a flu plus like we have!?

Unless a vet has told you "there is nothing a vet can do" - I would be asking a vet to come and give him a once-over.

this is exacly what i will be doing this weekend, its a pain in the bum as cant get any time of work due to anual billing (new bills for business and council tax going out) I was wondering if there was anything i can give him suppliment mind till then.

There should be something they can do even if it is just ventipulmin to clear the airways, you can get a good supplement to boost his immune system.
I would also be careful that rugging all the time is not making him worse as with a thick coat he may be getting very warm and over heating which will be raising his temperature and possibly dehydrating him to some extent.

fantastic, ok ill get the the vet out on the weekend, and in the mean time get some suppliments to try and help. He gets cold very quick with out his rug, but it does get taken off once a day as we are still working on the whole "i know its big and scary but its not going to hurt you" thing.

i have a respetory lick which he loves, always signes hes licking it. Did seem to clear up at one point but now its back. And being a baby he likes to throw a fit when washing his face (i love youngsters loL)

Whoever gave you the 'vet's can't do anything advice' is someone to steer well clear of.

The last thing you want is a case of pneumonia.

If it is JUST cough/cold then you could try NAF respirator boost, i have found it brilliant on the babies always have coughs and colds and I dont like to give them antibiotics and this stuff seems to do the job.....BUT as he has had bad start due to being weaned earlyI would get the vet, better to be safe than sorry!!!!

Does he live in or out? If in, what bedding do you use? What are you feeding, hay or haylage? If he lives in with hay, he could have RAO, formerly known as COPD. Have your vet check him for this. Good luck.

If he lives in also do you tie hay nets up or tie near the floor? Head raised and snotty nose doesn't let tie mucus drain and blocks up airwau
