My mare has recently started coughing when she’s ridden. At first, it would just be a cough here and there, and it would tend to clear and that was it. Over the last few days, the coughing has increased during exercise, to a point where I feel it’s now not fair to ride her due to coughing frequently.
She’s in during the day (I’ve started soaking her hay) and out at night on grass. I have not heard her cough whilst in the stable or field.
Some of the other horses had a slight cough, so we put it down to the dusty hay. Although theirs now seems to have gone and my horse’s has got worse. Is there anything I could give her to help it? Obviously if it doesn’t clear very soon, it’ll be a vet job 😩

I had one who did this at the same time every year. I had to get a course of Ventipulmin from the vet, that cleared it up but it always came back the following year. It came in April. He didn't cough except under saddle / on the lunge, but they were fierce big coughs that required completely slipped reins. It didn't actually appear to bother him in any other way- he was still happy in himself but riding was impossible. The ventipulmin cleared it up in a few days.

What's her temperature? This will help guide you to a vet visit asap or not.
If normal it's more likely to be any number of dust or pollens for example. If raised or low, then more likely an infection.
Please say you have been taking temp since coughing started.....

Mine has just finished a course of ventipulmin and i do think it helped. His came on suddenly (just as the vet arrived....obviously!!!!) after i put in a new bale of horrific shavings. When it was finished, i would squirt airways solution before exercise.
