My 19yr old mare has started coughing when eating her hay and hard feed. I am soaking the hay, and putting water in her feed. She is ok when out on the field and when she is not eating. Before I get the vet has anyone any thoughts?

Teeth?? they would be the first thought, if she is not able to chew properly that can cause coughing.

Is she eating really fast? My girl coughs occasionally if she gets a bit overenthusiastic, especially as I feed hay chop which is quite stalky.

She may be slightly choking on the feed!
I see you've started moisting down her feed, but the best thing you could do is turn everything she eats into a porridge. I would start introducing some hay cubes and beetpulp to act as hay replacer and start removing the hay. She may be having trouble chewing things properly and thus the choking.
