coughing after drinking water

my horse eats his hard food has a drink and then coughs but sometimes when he coughs the water comes out of his nose too and he looks very distressed. He also does it sometimes after eating hay and then drinking. Any suggestions re cause/problem?

Sounds as if it could be a touch of choke, do you dampen his feed.

Has he had a tie-back? It's quite likely in ex-racers and more and more ordinary horses have them too. They do it if the tie-back has been done a bit too tight and they get food and water down their windpipe.
