As title really.

My boy's started coughing. He generally has a little splutter and tickle for the first 10 mins or so of a hack, but recently he's started coughing more than usual.

Anyone else's horses doing the same? He doesn't have a snotty nose or anything, and his field-companion isn't affected.

Could it be the pollen??? - seasonal allergy or whatever?

Would feeding Aloe Vera juice do any good? I read on here somewhere that its good for coughs. If so what dosage???

Sorry lots of questions. He's out at the moment and having two feeds (damped down) a day; and is in light exercise (hacking). I don't know whether he should be doing anything though.

Mine was coughing a couple of weeks ago and I put him on Aloe Vera. He has stopped now but there a few horses on the yard coughing as the moment. I give him 50 mls am and pm but you can feed up to 150mls a day.

Our pony is doing this and I think it must be a reaction to the rapeseed growing in next field! I started her on aloe Vera juice yesterday on Noodlebugs suggestion. She is on 60ml twice a day! Holland and Barratt have it on special offer! 480ml is half price so around £2.99. I have also put a flymask with nose net on her too!

my boy has hayfever but tends to shake not cough. could it be dust with the drier weather or from the hay?
or just a cough haha xx

Jeez! I spent £12 on a bottle of Aloe Vera juice today in a cranky health food shop; it was all that was open and I wanted to get the stuff in him ASAP.

But thanks for the input folks, and suggestions.

Coughing that isn't linked to the standard symptoms of a chest infection eg fever etc is likely to be pollen allergy if it starts around this time of year. My veteran has it very badly but doesn't normally start coughing until mid June, because it takes about that long for the cells that line the airways to be kicked into action to start producing mucus and for the mucus to reach levels that make him cough. Worryingly, he's started with a few coughs already this season but I'm hoping that's down to the dry and dusty conditions. Keep a close eye on your horse as Summer Pasture Associated COPD (SPACOPD) can be very difficult to control and can worsen every year.

Aloe Vera is very helpful for coughing caused by dust or allergies, it is also beneficial used alongside veterinary medicines when the cause is chest infection. BUT do beware of the cheap ones, especially H&B very cheap bottles, whilst they seem to make the expensive ones look like a rip off, they are false economy. They actually contain very little aloe Vera so in fact you need to feed gallons of it to get any real benefit. The best one is quite expensive and not sold in shops, but is pretty much pure aloe. You get what you pay for.
Also there is no maximum to feed, you can't cause any harm by feeding much more than needed, it's just wasteful.
Aloe Vera is fantastic for many many ailments, human, equine and canine. But it really is one of those times when it's worth spending on the best.
