Coughing, but doesn't quite match up to COPD or RAO symptoms

Coughing seems to be very random, and no nasal discharge. On ventipulmin and just finished a course of bute. We're on our forth day of meds.
He's out 24/7 since symptom started, no hay, just grass for now. Light hacking, nothing strenous, well in himself, and no raised temp.
What other health issues can cause the throat to be irritated?

Mine had similar, intermittent cough (every time I went to get the vet out it would go away!) although he did have nasal discharge. Turned out to be bronchitis. He went on two weeks of ventipulmin and norodine granules. By the end of the first week all symptoms had stopped, but had to keep him on the meds until they ran out which was another week.

He too lives out 24/7 but I stopped all exercise since he was coughing, as exercising a coughing horse will only make it worse!

p87, my vet said that the exercise (walking) helps to free up any mucus that might be sitting on his lungs/throat, and it's no more than what he would be doing, on his steep field. (Oh and try telling that to a horse that comes galloping up the field..)

My vet told me the opposite lol although since he lives out he is walking around anyway, and it was mainly going in to trot he would start coughing, even though a gallop up the field when I call wouldn't start a coughing fit? Very strange!

A previous vet from a different practise told me exactly the same as the one I have now. I suppose each vet has their own approach on dealing with it. His cough has improved immensely since Friday, and i'm in regular contact with his vet.
