My year old mucky pup started coughing today so I wormed with Drontal as about due now realise it doesn't do Lungworm. I also frontlined all the girls today too.

So will call vet tomorrow but getting myself in a tizz.

If lungworm how will they tell? Also as just drontaled and frontlined would that mean she can't have advocate? What could we do ? Can they have panacur safely immediately after drontal?

Worried sick - won't sleep a wink :(

you can use advocate 2 wks after the others

but if you want to sleep tomorow pop into the vets and get her checked it may just be kennel cough

I will phone vet as soon as they open tomorrow and see if they want to see her.

Would Panacur be my only option immediately then ?

the only thing lisenced for lungworm is advocate

so panacur would be no use

i think the may way they tell is by putting slight pressure on certain parts of the throat and listening to chest and interpretting what they find

Coughing can be for many reasons, lungworm is just one of them (others could include kennel cough, some other respiratory disease, something she's inhaled that's irritated her airway and several more things). If she's well in herself otherwise then I honestly wouldn't panic at this stage, just ring the vets in the morning and maybe keep separate from other dogs in case of infectious respiratory disease. If they do suspect lungworm they will likely take a faecal sample to look for eggs. Panacur granules are liscenced to treat some species of lungworm and have a specific dosing schedule for this and Milbemax can also be used to reduce worm burden (again using a specific dosing schedule which your vet would work out according to product guidelines and species suspected) as can Advocate. Unsure of what the safety margin is when giving with other products but again your vet will either know or will be able to source this information.

I have spoken to vet who was very helpful and informative. As Ruby is now coughing too as of this morning we suspect a virus and as both girls are well in themselves, eating well, bouncy, firm normal stools, good colour and normal temp we are going to wait until monday and not panic.

I think I may switch to Advocate from now on to be safe than sorry as we are such a wet sluggy area.

Thank you for support and advice.

Panacur will treat lungworm but it has to be an extended dose, not the normal worming dose. I think (off the top of my head) you use half the regular dosage but continue treatment for 10 days.
Milbemax will reduce a lungworm infestation but not treat it.
A first dose of Advocate will kill most of the infestation. Two doses, 1 month apart, will treat it entirely. However, there's no preventative, so if lungworm is in the area, the dog could contract it within days of the second dose. This is why I treat mine year-round with Advocate, basically I'm constantly treating for any infestation. I had debated easing off it over summer to give them a break from chemicals but with this rubbish summer weather, we still have plenty of slugs and snails around!

Not entirely correct.

There are TWO species of lungworm affecting dogs in the UK.

Angiostrongylus vasorum (French Heartworm) - ADVOCATE is licensed to treat.

Oslerus (Filaroides) osleri* - PANACUR is licensed to treat.

Which one is from slugs and snails?

It turned out to be Kennel cough but am now using Advocate to be safe than sorry as have huge slug and snail population unfortunately.

I did speak to my vet who said Panacur will treat lungworm but would need to be given daily for about 4 weeks to do a proper job IF it was a really bad infestation.

Advocate is the only one that does it quickly and the only licenced one they recommend.

Now have the joys of getting then through this kennel cough and keeping them restricted to our house and garden which they are non too chuffed about and keeping finding escape routes!!
