my mare has a cough. Another horse in her field had a cough a few weeks ago and still coughs a bit now and i think she has passed it on to my horse. Her chin was a bit swollen and she has become tired when i go to get her from the field but is eager to go when i ride. she mainly coughs in trot and canter when ridden. All her vaccinations are up to date. She has a greenish thick discharge from her nose too. All help appreciated. xx (:

A green discharge isnt good atall, I would be getting a Vet to check her out. In my area there have been cases of Strangles so its wise to be careful. A lot of horses suffering from the pollen this year and ending up on Ventipulmin so its worth a Vet visit...

You should not really be riding your horse if it is coughing that badly as it could cause long term damage.

Take your horses temperature that will give you a good indication if it is an infection or not. Anything over 38.5C will need immediate vet attention.

Green discharge is often signs of bacterial infection so may need antibiotics I am afraid this is a vet job and I would not wait around too long.

Any update op? Another who would suggest vet after having a coughing horse who could have had serious long lasting repercussions had I not acted quickly (diagnosed with copd but touch wood has been fine with some management changes )
