Hi,

My mare is currently coughing quite a lot when she comes out of the stable first thing in the morning, and also snorts a lot, almost like she is clearing her air ways the first 20mins of work. Her wind is ok, as she is fine XC etc, but the snorting and coughing etc does worry me a bit!

Has anyone had anything similar and found a supplement that helps? I am taking her off Hay and putting on haylegde to see if that will help too.?

Thanks.

One of the horses at our yard is running a low level virus at the mo, coughing and snotting (nice!) even when out in field but temperature and in himself, all ok.

If it's just coughing in the morning in the stable is most likely environmental, are you on straw or shavings, is the straw dustier than normal or is the hay dustier than normal. Soaking the hay for min 20mins should get rid of dust or switch to haylage like you say. If you have concerns over health maybe keep an eye on temperature etc just to put your mind at rest.

PS Wingery Ventilate supposed to be very good, not tried it but many people on here recommend it.

Hope this helps x

Thank you. She is on shavings on rubber matting, and hay at the moment, but they hay is good quality and not dusty. Hopefully the hayledge will help, as the breathing supplements all seem quite expensive!

Thanks again.

My two boys are a little bit 'coughy' at the moment.. have been told there is something going round at the moment, its nothing major, but would prefer for them not to throw a cough every so often! one of mine also has a little bit of a runny nose...
Most people already put it in as routine, but if not garlic in thier feed helps, and as said above the less dust the better, and haylage makes a big difference.

hope she gets better soon!
