RANDOM - I have seen this in 2 elderly horses now (neither being mine but liveries on my yard 1 moved on 1 current)

Has anyone ever come across of can tell me any outcome they have had for an elderly horse, who seems to be spitting out pellets of Grass/feed. Both Horses I have seen this in have been elderly and believed to have suffered from dental problems both horses 20 ish. If anyone could give me any ideas's pointers in the right directions ie vet needed or dentist needed I'd be gateful or even if someone has seen this before and may know what it is?? or what causes it??

:-)
Thanks S x

Make sure any dental treatment/advice given on elderly horses is not radical. Older horses need conservative treatment, as their remaining tooth substance is all they have to last them til they die, so doesn't need rasping away without VERY good reason.

Thank you everyone it's interesting you are all saying see a dentist as he has just come back from being on load and so called just had a tooth out by the vets??!!! but surely its not normal to do that, its almost like a pellet like an owl coughs up, do you know what I mean??

If he's had a tooth out the grass will collect in the gap and then to clear it he'll need to cough it out. That's quidding, my boy has diatemas and quids for that reason :)

definatley quidding. this is when grass or foarge gets collected up in gaps in the teeth and then gets spat out as a soggy wad!

my old mare does this- she has big gaps where there are no teeth left, and so the grass/forage balls up in these gaps and is eventually spat out.

my advice would be to have a dentist assess his teeth, and if necessary get him onto a fibre replacer such as fast fibre from allan and page, it is a mash so no problem for the dentally challenged.
