Hi - Just trying to get an idea of how common it is in winter for horses to cough when you first start trot work - he is out during the day, in on a night with steamed hay - he still coughes and clears his nose everytime he is worked (near enough) - do yours? : )

My big girl does it whenever she starts trotting, winter or not, two big coughs. Sometimes she farts explosively at the same time and I have to be careful not to fall off laughing.

The 25yo does generally, as he eats hay in the morning, others not so often, but its not something I worry about - just let him walk a bit longer then trot again :)

Have either of your big horses had a hobday and tieback common in big horses and often causes slight cough at the beginning of excercise my big chap has and does cough on first trotting but only if he's just been eating hay.

My 20 year old mare did this sometimes when we first started trotting. I found it was because she hoards grass in her mouth like a hamster!:D I always make sure her mouth is clear now and she hasn't done it since.:)

I know lots of horses that do this including one of mine. So long as it's just an initial couple of coughs, and otherwise the breathing sounds fine, I don't worry.

Yes - always. Just once or twice the very first time going into trot, so we come back to walk, go back into trot and everything's fine for the rest of the ride.

One of mine always did when I first bought him now only does it now and again when he starts work after coming off the lorry.
my new horse did it every day at first but now only now and again .
I don't worry about it I did feed one once the winery ventilate supplement on advice of the vet and it helped a lot and will try it on these two at some point when the penny's allow it.
