My horse is a 6yrs old arab that is being brought back int work slowly after time off for a sore back due to a badly fitted saddle.
I keep him out at grass and when i come to ride i catch him, groom, tack up and hop on (takes about 10mins). I am currently riding him in walk only with a little bit of trot.
I have noticed that once or twice when in trot he has startde to cough - three or four nasty coughs then carries on as normal.
Should I be leaving more time between him coming off grass and being ridden or could it be something else? he doesnt do it in walk only in trot so far.
Any ideas what it could be?

i would like to know what others say cause my 6yr old has beein doing exactally the samething for a while after the first trot she is fine for the rest of the ride

Ty does exactly the same (coughs twice on warmup). Never used to but now he's in a stable 22 hours a day the dust must be getting to him. Another reason I'm moving him.

No not fed hay and nothing coming out when coughing. He is fine warmed up in walk for 10 mins but his first couple of trots he coughs a few times.

dont panick-mine does it ocasionally with no ill effect-if there is loads of manky coloured snot coming out then id say cough or cold but if at worst its a little bit of clearish liquid after excersise then dont worry. coughing can be casued by many things such as dust from dry ground/hay/bedding/pollen allergy/sand kicked up from sandschool etc etc etc!!

My little man does this, always has and always will, mainly in the winter. The last owners just before me had him tested by vets foir everything, lungs done etc and nothing, heart etc and nothing so i know its just like clearing his throat. I know all this as i am at the same yard and when they told me results i wasnt considering buying him

It has never effected him and only in trot, he just does it and carries on as normal. Jumps, does xc and everything and never effects him and he is 11 - done it all his life apparently so as long as no other symptons may just be a habit thing or something

Is there any discharge with the cough and does he have a temperature? My horse coughs when ridden. I had extensive (and expensive!) tests done, all of which came back clear. Funnily enough he doesn't do it when he's doing stuff he likes, only when he's being schooled!!
