Dais was coughing a bit today out hunting. There's no sign of snot, just coughed up the odd bit of spittle from her bit.

She's only in at night and has soaked hay. I'm wondering if I need to take the window off the back wall of her stable because it's like a cave in there. Very cosy but no through flow of air.

Any other tips?

I'm going to call the vet to see what he thinks but don't want to have him out for something unneccessary

My chap developed a cough last year. It was really mild although the depths of winter, so I turned him out 24/7 for a few days while I gave his stable a really thorough clean, using an industrial vacuum cleaner! All the cobwebs were holding hay spores and dust which he had beome allergic to. Also there was some hay stored in the stable next door which I moved. I did call the vet as well though, as he needed a course of Ventipulmin to clear it up. He was quite snotty as well as having the cough.

Do you deep litter?

Our vet reccomended daily muck outs to prevent ammonia build up for a horse prone to coughs and snots...

And as we had vents put in the back wall to help air flow.... seemed to do the trick...

I had a pony who whilst happy to be bedded on straw (mucked out daily) could not cope with hay. It made him cough whether fed dry or soaked. I put him onto Devon Haylage as an experiment really and hey, presto - the cough stopped overnight!

I did also clear out the cobwebs and dust, as they were quite bad before changing over to the haylage, but it didn't really make a difference. Like yours he was part stabled.

Worth a try perhaps before getting the vet out?

He was all right on the occasional net of hay, but fed daily it would eventually make the cough come back.
