Bit of a dim sounding question but does anyone know what a coughing dog sounds like ? I have a 5 year old collie who I thought was choking/being sick - thats the kind of noise she's making but she's not stopping so now I'm wondering if she's coughing ! She's a bit quiet but otherwise seems ok although she has just been sick a couple of times. Any ideas ?

Sounds like, either an irritation, caused by a food substance, chew going down the wrong way, or kennel cough, which sounds horrendous, like they are coughing their guts up, it gets worse before it gets better, and unless the dog gets a serious bout, that effects breathing or are uanble to take fluids or food over a period of 2-3 days, then anit b's could be given, if not then it's usually best to let it take it's course, baby benlyn, can sometimes soothe it, but u need to speak to your vet b4 administering, to get a dose guide.

Does sound like it is kennel cough. There's a lot of it around at the moment. It can leave the airways open to infection, such as pneumonia, which is why vets like to give ABs. It is also contagious, so you need to be careful that she does not pass it onto other dogs. KC sounds horrible and can last for a while. Pressure on the underside of the neck (throat area) can set them off coughing again. If I walk any of the foster dogs at all while the have KC (well away from other dogs) then I use a harness to take the pressure off their throats.

Hope she's OK

thanks for the replies - she's alot worse tonight, does that fit with kennel cough ? Yesterday coughed a few times and today coughing alot ? She lives with another, younger dog who seems fine, if it was kennel cough would they not both have it ?

Yes, it does fit with kennel cough

. Often gets worse before it gets better. Your other dog may show symptoms a few days later, or may not get it at all. While it sounds awful, it is usually not actually serious to otherwise healthy dogs. Just need to be careful of anything secondary. If you do go to the vets, you will need to wait outside so you don't pass it onto other dogs.

if u go on youtube and type in kennel cough ... its on there
