Hi guys

Yesterday whilst I was at work I got a text from my yard owner saying that Ruby was coughing a lot, I don't go up in the mornings as my YO gives her a breakfast and turns her out for me. I went up after work and got her in and she wasn't coughing at all, Hacked her out and she was fine. Had a canter and she started coughing over and over, it sounded like she was wheezing. I asked her to trot again and she stopped coughing. I watered down her feed and gave her a wet haynet and this morning I got another text to say coughing was a lot better.

Do you know what it could be? I will keep my eye on it and keep watering down her feeds and hay. I will keep her out as much as possible too. Vet is up on the 26th anyway as she needs her next vac. If no improvement I will ask him then.

It might be a reaction to dust in the stable and hay. What type of bedding have you got her on?

My lad will start coughing at the slightest hint of dust and sounds like he smokes 40 a day :o I soak his hay overnight (out in the field at night and in the stable during the day) and i also have him on Safemix 440 which i have found to be the best bedding so far out of all the others we have tried in the past 3 and a half years as far as the amount of dust produced is concerned.

Hope her cough clears up soon.

It's almost certainly COPD/RAO although you'll need to work out what the allergen is. This time of year probably pollen. If she has a heaves line and is intolerant of exercise you need to take great care. She is struggling to get enough oxygen into her body. If it is a pollen allergy then you'll have your work cut out managing it because every breath she takes from about March to September is laden with pollen. And the reaction of the cells lining her airways, in response to the histamines her body will be producing, means that she will probably cough until December. Do a search on my posts for pollen allergy - everything I've ever learnt about it since my veteran developed it 6 years ago.

Quick update. I left her in on Mon eve and she was out all day Tues (I gave her the day off) she had a roll and then started coughing again. As soon as she got up she was fine. She was running around the field with the others before I left, she wasn't coughing then and she stayed out overnight and is out all day today.

I have her on a straw bed, however she spends most of the time living out. I will continue to soak hay and feed. The only thing that has changed since Mon is they were swapped in to a new field. Could that have anything to do with it?
