Coughing

Both my horses are coughing, Bailey is snotty but is prone to chest things and are usually not serious and don't affect his work. I suspect it is the dust from being in, during the wet weather they're out now hes having the naf cough stuff before being ridden and theres been a huge improvement, hes coughing maybe twice after work. Ryu however has never coughed in his life and is coughing at rest just very ocassionaly but a big cough, then I walked him round the farm last night and he was doing a big cough then kind of roaring in his breathing, I've given him some global herbs Pollen-X, but I have a RC rally tonight, I planned to give him the naff stuff before we go and just see how he is, we have a local adult riding camp all weekend, do you think it'll be ok to take him to these things? Obiously if hes not right we'll come home, its so frustrating we've hardly been out all summer because of the weather and now my horses are sick!

Not much good with advice I'm afraid, but there seems to be a lot of coughing going around, I posted as I'm having the same problem with George. I have started giving him his hay on the floor and global herbs airway plus (blimey it stinks) and the cough is much better, but lots of the horses on our yard are coughing but all seem well in themselves. We suspect it may be a combination of the green hay we're using and the weather change.

If he doesn't normally cough I wouldn't be taking him anywhere both to ensure you don't irritate things and make it worse and more to the point if he has got a virus or something infectious so don't pass it onto others. Could you ring your vet and get some advice?

George - same at our yard, everything is coughing must be linked to the weather, Bails always has soaked hay and shavings as a preventative, Ryu has always seemed imune so didn't wet his hay, will do from now on, you live you learn!
Sarah-Jane, spoke to vet yesterday she wasn't too concerned as theres no discharge but said to take it easy, and sent some of that Pollen-X, unfortunately I know you're right and we should stay home - again

We have the same problem, with the foal having had a real attack of the snots. We had him blood tested and nose-swabbed, but appeared to be just some sort of summer cold. He's virtually over the snots, but is still coughing, and now his mum and one of the others are also coughing ... don't know what is going on this year!!! Maybe more spores around than usual, as it been so wet, and now hot again?

Anyway, we've switched ours from hay to haylage as of today. But have heard that there is a lot of foal sickness going round this year, typically snots and coughing. But it is very frustrating when it stops you doing stuff!
