Gilbyfoot-1.jpg

Having a few problems with Gilby at the moment to do with this leg (near hind). Have been looking closely at his legs everyday for the last week or so and have only just noticed this tonight. It feels like its full of fluid and doesn't seem bothered when I was having a feel of it. He seems more lame on it tonight than he has been previously and I was wondering if maybe its connected to what might be going on with his leg?

Any ideas much appreciated :)

(also in vets)

Thorn or a sting wound maybe, I had a horse fly bite on my finger and it was so painful caused a big blister that made my hand throb, could this be similar?

is it the black dot or the white area? difficult to see, could be pus coming through. I would hot poltice the area and see what comes out tomorrow.

Sorry I know the photo isn't great, I had to take it on my phone.

He has been on box rest for a week so I don't think it'll be a thorn. Have been washing his legs everyday and haven't noticed any ticks and definitely aren't any now. Suppose it could be a sting/bite but normally there is a lump or sort of head to them aren't there and this doesn't. I know the photo doesn't show it well but it isn't a lump and its like an opaquey white with a dark rim around the edge. It feels a bit like if you press too hard it would burst.

My first thought was maybe an abscess (sp?) but have never seen one that has presented like this. Were having a bit of a time with this leg at the moment and everyday I seem to find something else :(

I know it looks a fair bit too back on his foot, but it couldn't be bruising from a tread injury could it? If he's backed up into something I would imagine he could have bruised it causing lameness?

Thanks Touchstone I hadn't thought of that! I think he has feather mites which he is currently being treated for but its still very itchy. The other day I saw him back into the wall of his stable and he looked like he was trying to itch this part of his leg on the wall so could very well be!

Can i be cheeky and ask what you're using to wash his legs? I only ask because a horse at a yard i used to be at had something similar. He was having his legs washed everyday for a spot of mudfever on two legs when he started doing the same as your horse and they found a similar patch on him. They continued on and when he looked like he was colicing one night they got the vet. Turned out he was having an allergic reaction to the teatree that was in the stuff they were using on his legs. Could it maybe be something like that?

I have been using hibiscrub but in the last few days have changed over to Aloe Vera soap. I have used both on him before and he has been fine with them in the past but suppose it is another possibility. Will keep an eye on him and ask the yard owner to check over him too. Vet is coming tomorrow so hopefully she may be able to figure it out. Thanks for all the replies!
