We've had our cob mare since mid-January and have found her quite itchy. Initially we thought she was just too warm in her rug but we're thinking it's the chop we're giving her. We only want to give her a little something in order to give her supplements, e.g. garlic, brewers yeast. Her previous owner fed her molychop but because she's quite forward we didn't want to give her anything with sugar so chose the Dengie. We're told she's never had sweetitch (she's hogged). We bathed her a few weeks ago with a tea-tree shampoo when we had a very warm spell in case there was anything in her coat. Has anyone else found the Dengie Hi-Fi causes itchiness or should we be looking elsewhere for the cause?

Thanks.

Never heard of it causing itchiness? Perhaps get the vet to look at her skin(scrape)

Moulting?

How itchy do you mean?? Non stop?? My cob would scratch until his hearts content if I didnt electrify the fencing!

Any bald patches?? Constant rolling etc.

It has been really warm as well and midges out too??

YES it can!!! Horses can be intolerant to Alfalfa which is in Hi-fi and alfa-a. My friend's horse has an intolerance to alfalfa and became itchy and lumpy.
I would cut out the alfalfa. Mollichaff doesn't contain it so maybe try that for a while.

Try Mollichaff Calmer if you want low sugar, or spillers cool fibre.

It is the excess protein in alfalfa that makes them itchy apparently.
