OH's Dad offered me his horse as a free project when he last visited. I have posted a pic before but here it is again (as I know we all like looking at the piccies!)

There are a few issues however:

1. Passport says ID xTB but he is deffo an ex racer so clearly dodgey passport as bought from a dealer. Is there any way of tracing his weatherby's passport?

2. OH's Dad at 15/16 stone has been riding him and given him a sore back - vet has told him never to ride Ben again! Horse physio been out and given a couple of sessions but would the riding (approx twice a week quiet hacking for about three months) have permanently damaged his back?

3. Can be scared of men/sudden movements (I'm quiet and would want to keep him at a small yard so he would get into a routine so don't think this would be too much of an issue)

4. Farrier been today and put natural balance shoes on due to flat feet

Going to go and ride him next week (taking my lunge stuff as an ex racer having had 3 weeks off may be a bit insane). Will have him vetted but just worried that the heaviness of OH;s Dad may have damaged him permanently as before he was given the time off OH's Dad said that he was still riding him despite the fact he was slightly lame!!!!!? Also, my farrier does not believe in natural balance shoes so would it be difficult to go back to normal shoes?

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated!

Go for it!

I cant see why any lasting damage will have been done with the physio having seen him..

He may well have ID as he has quite a stocky frame by the looks of things.. to get a weatherby's passport you would need to know his correct racing name.

NBS are exceptionally good when used on flat footed horses.

PS i remember him from afew eeks back.. i even remembered his name! Must have stuck in my memory.

Wouldn't want to comment on his back as that is a vet thing but re the passport if he is a racehorse born after 1999 he will be micro chipped so ask your vet to scan for a microchip. Also I have a horse that was shod under the balance shoe method for his previous owner and our blacksmith changed him over to normal shoeing with no problems.
