Could horse have been doped?

A friend of my mine went to see a horse (to purchase) who appeared very quiet and sensible; hacked him out etc and appeared to be the ideal horse.

Returned for another look with another person. Took him for a short ride (brief one) and horse was constantly tripping. Got back into stable and felt like he was going to fall over. Untacked horsey and head really lowered to the floor and eyes appeared glazed and just looked totally out of it! Thought very sorry for him as he was either unwell or could he of been doped up?

Does this actually happen?
 
Could have been doped but could also have been deprived of water which will have a similar effect and won't show up if your friend had bloods taken at the vetting. Or may have been worked hard prior... or may just be a really laid back horse. Is she going to view again?
 
Yes most likely, thank goodness she went the second time without buying outright.

When I was horse searching I went to view one and the owner was shocked when we turned up, having thought we were coming the next day. The horse was blatantly nodding through a stifle injury (non horsey mum spotted it straight away). No doubt if we had of turned up the next day he would've been buted up, the horse would've been fine and grandad would've bought him for me (he's not the type to get a vetting or anything!)

Thankfully I had a lucky escape and got my lovely boy instead :D :D

She did look for the water and it was in the stable. I think the second viewing he appeared worse. No she will not be returning again. And yes she would have a horse vetted / bloods taken, but how long would it remain in the system before it would show up.

You certainly had a lucky escape. My friend would actually go back about 6 times to try out! She has been looking most of the year for a horse.
