I am only 5'2" tall but my weight varies between 9st and 10st 7lbs

If I ever get another horse I was wondering about going for a m/w 14.2hh pony - but would I be too heavy?

Maybe something like the Welsh Sect D x TB on the adverts on the right (although I notice that is 15hh!)

Not at all, the important thing is how much bone the pony has but you'd be well within what a mw pony was capable of carrying.

I'm the same height as you, and probably the same weight (don't really know as I never weigh myself). My mare is a middleweight 14.3hh Connemara x TB, plus I also ride my daughter's 14.1hh pony, who is slightly more lightweight.

Ooooh, thank you

I seem to vary between having smaller horses (15hh Welsh sect D, 15.1 Irish Cob x ISH) and larger ones (16.2hh ID x TB and 16.2+ SF) but thought a smaller one might be easier (and cheaper) to maintain than my gorgeous SF boy was

I was quite taken with a little 14.2hh bay mare I used to borrow at a friends yard - she was a fiesty little thing and so much fun as you say! Unfortunately they wanted silly money for me - something like £4k when she was just broken, hardly schooled, completely green, etc etc

As long as the pony could jump PN then I would be happy

- although acknowledging that a pony with scope to do that is slightly outside my price bracket

It would depend on the build of the horse. If it is more towards the sec D then it will probably take up your leg well so you wouldn't feel too big.
My last two were 14.2 and 14.3. Im 5ft3. The 14.3 was Arab and at times he felt a bit small for me, and I had to watch my weight, the 14.2 was a a little Irish pony and he took up my leg and never felt small.
When I sold the 14.2 I bought a 16.2, now that was a big change!! But I can eat now!!

I'm 5'1'', 9 1/2 stone and ride a 14.2hh coloured cob with no problems. Sometimes I'm pretty sure I'd need to be at least 2 stone heavier before he noticed me out hunting, lol!
I used to ride a 12.3hh scurry pony who was a slightly built Welsh B type every day and had no problems at all and I was at least half a stone heavier then. Sometimes I would also ride one of the smaller pair, a well built (read chunky monkey

) 11.2hh Welsh A and he went like stink. I sometimes think that people underestimate how big a horse they need, especially when it comes to heavier/native breeds.

A lot of natives were designed to carry adults out on the hills all day. I once saw an edition of Time Team where they discovered a medieval camp, complete with tack for the war'horses'. Based on the size of the tack and what they already knew they dressed Tony Robinson up as a knight, mounted on a pony that was around 13.2hh!

sorry for the rant but why are so mny people so hung up about the size of the horses and pony's they ride.

When I was young you used to ride 14.2's until you left school.

Most people that hunted were mounted on horses no bigger than 15.2.

SO why is it now that you have to have a 16.2 at 14.

Sorry but it does annoy me. I also think people are too hung up about what a pony can pull or carry, especially hardy natives that are designed to live out without rugs.

I think alot of people have gone a bit soft.

no idea, I left school a fair few years ago, I'm only little so there's no point in me having a big horse, I'd never be able to get on!

I'm 5'2" (ish) and just undr 9st. I ride a 3/4 TB skinny 14.1hh. He competes at PN with me (when I'm brave) and happily jumps 1.20m ( I'm not happy at that height). I was worried that I was too big for him, but everyone says it just fine.

Sorry, I didn't have a chestnut eventer I'm afraid! I had a bay SF eventer, unfortunately I had to sell him in Feb due to lack of money
