Hi,
I know everyone hates these sort of threads, but...
I am in two minds if I could get away riding a horse/ pony as im useless on these weight issues, and I would like very honest op on it, I'm about 12 st clothed, height not problem as im 5'5 or 5'6. horse in question I believe is termed as middle weight?? Cob, 14.3 poss 15h, 4yrs, measured leg just below knee 9 inch, and half way down leg is 8 inch ( was quite hard to get with feathers). Don't know weight of horse, but not over weight, but does have the cob apple bum.
Would it be ok?

Sounds about the same size as the chap I ride. I'm 10st 4 but he has carried heavier and been quite happy about it. I would think you'd be fine. :)

Fine for light work if horse fit.

So, if sharing for a while/really buying for your kids/similar don't see why not.

But if your considering buying it for you I wouldn't as there will be plenty that suit your weight a little better and you'll be able to ride if you gain a bit/they loose a little condition/you want to do anything strenuous.

Hey xTrooperx, I weigh similar to you (I am loosing weight though), I am 5'7-5'8 and I own & ride a 14.3hh Andy X TB X Riding Pony.

I take him out eventing and we have never once had a problem. As long as you ride light and carry your own weight, it shouldn't be a problem.

This is what GK and I look like together...

Hard to really judge, but in theory sounds ok. But if he's a short coupled stocky type then you might struggle to get a saddle to fit you both, even if he is up to your weight.

He would easily carry you, I am same size and height as you and ride 14hh dales ponies regularly and they all carry me perfectly fine

Thank you everyone that posted, so i will bite the bullet and ride, I would only be plodding up and down lanes, so nothing to hard, unless she seem happy and rather full of beans, then it may call for a short canter in the woods :O).
Neanea83 your horse looks bigger than only 14.3, it gets me how you can look at two the same height and you could of sworn there was at least a hand differeance.

xTrooperx good for you :) I am sure you both will be fine.

GK has a big personality and was gelded when he was 10, hence why I named him after Gene Kelly. Both move like angels, but can be absolute pricks when they want to be... haha

GK is rather lovely. Was he used at stud? I imagine he could have bred some nice 14.2hh.

Thanks Ladyinred :)

It's taken me a while to get him back to looking this good. I suspect people I bought him off abused him. He was skinny as and head shy. Lucky he overcame that quickly.

He was used at stud and I have seen pictures of 2 of his babies. Braago and Mojo, they are dead ringers of GK. Mojo is a dark dappled grey (what I imagine GK looked like when he was younger) and his owner has said he is lightening up and looking more like his dad each day.

12st fully clothed (inc riding gear) is what most 'Im 10st' riders weight anyways. Im a tiny bit over 10st ( 5'8 and slim) and must weight not far off 12st with my riding stuff on! My height has more effect on what I ride than weight. The horse you described would carry me easily:I I have one!

A tiny bit smaller at 14.2/14.3 and no more that a middleweight.
