Of late Ive noticed Murphy has been off colour, also after excersise he has had a runny nose. He has been warm lately - but I assumed this was due to him holding his coat.

Having read HH's article on strangles - could he have gotten strangles?

Best thing to do is to call your vet as he/she can come out and have a look at your horse...best to be safe than sorry and what's a call out charge for peice of mind...
Do hope it's not x

Has he been anywhere different? Had new horses arriving on the yard? It is very unliekly to be strangles and more likely a virus. Take temp and keep an eye on him.

It doesn't sound like typical strangles (where there's lots of thick discharge from their nose most of the time, and they can feel very very under the weather), but you can't be too sure, and it could be a virus. If you're worried about him, why not make a call to the vet to see if it's worth a visit?

Check out the animal health trust as well just for your own information (obviously you'll want the vet to check as well). It says on there that incubation period is 7 - 14 days so I would think unless your horse has come into contact with anything since you brought him back from the loan home you should be o.k. They have some good information on there. My horse has just recovered from strangles (I was in the process of buying her at the time) so don't worry too much if he does end up having it (though it seems very unlikely to me that he will). She got it in Feb and is totally fine now - had all swabs and PCRs come back clear. Good luck and hope it isn't strangles.

Hmm was the yard he went to a dealer also or have I got that wrong? Just thinking if it was a yard that had quite a few horses coming and going, it maybe worth getting him checked out just to be safe.

I'm like you, I read a arcitle and totaly certian my hrse has it...It doesn't sound like strangles, ours had nose bleeds and huge swollen football size absese on his neck, the vet came out but thought it was an injury due to were it was, my i add little libery god blamed for kicking him

He took blood samples anyhow and it turned out to be strangles. Please do put a sign on your stable still so people don't touch him then anouther. Let your yard owner know he's off colour too. Sounds like his got abit of a virus.

Yes St Bernard you are quite righthe was on a dealers yard.
I am getting thevet out to see him on the weekend, so she can let me know what she thinks.
