Morning All,

I could do with some feedback..

Found my small pony lame yesterday - quite a limp/head nodding from near fore.

She has a horizontal red line bruising about 1mm thick and 5 cm long running round a third of the way down her hoof. Had loose shoes about 1 half ago with small pus in the frog. This particular hoof has always been boxier than the others. All white feet, used to crack all the time but have been generally good and solid in recent years.

She is overweight, but ridden at least 5 days a week ranging from mild hack to hard work depending on ground conditions. Very hard to keep weight off, lives out 24/7, aged 13, turned lame overnight.

Any ideas, am feeling like its going to be laminitis..am calling vet for some advice once I get off work...

Hi

You're wise to be concerned, and I would still advise calling your vet or farrier for some advice, and tell them you're concerned about lami.

However, what you've described sounds more like bruising/pus to me. With lami, they tend to be lame on more than one foot - pottery and sore, rather than lame (ie, limping on one foot). She would have been showing mild symptoms (pottering, digital pulses, hot feet etc) before coming down with lami (not always, as it can strike suddenly).

Personal opinion, it's a nasty bruise and she wants to worry you as much as possible! (Don't they all?)

Hope she's ok, and keep us posted.

Don't think it isn't laminitis even if it is just in one leg, my girl is on her first week of box rest for laminitis in one leg after two weeks of vet telling me they couldn't get it in one leg and it was a abscess. Got a different vet out last thurs when she couldn't move and it is the dreaded lami, she's 24yr and never had it in her life!! PLEASE GET VET ASAP and in the meantime treat as though it is laminitis xxxx

Hi,

I would agree to treat as laminitis until you know any different. Managing in this way shouldnt cause any problems if it is anything else and will cover all basis if it is.

Good luck and let us know how you get on with the vet.
