Hi everyone!
I posted this in Reddit, the pictures are linked to the Reddit post below.
Is my Mare pregnant or not?!?!? Graphic Horse Pictures
I will be adding pictures to this post, and I have contacted my vet, but they can’t get us in for a couple of weeks and I’m going crazy!
First off, we got our horses in January 2024. A mare and a Gelding. Shortly after the horses arrived we got a Donkey— a Jack.
My mare has not shown any signs of being in heat AT ALL since we’ve had her. We asked her previous owner if there’s any chance she could be pregnant, he said “absolutely not” but then told us that she was a surprise. He didn’t know his mare was pregnant until she had my mare. He also told us some other information about the horses that the vet confirmed was not true, so idk if I should believe him.
Fast forward to July 22nd. I noticed my mare had some swelling right in front of her udder. I started doing research and the things I read said “Late term pregnancy”. What?!? She can’t be pregnant? So I did more research and found different signs to check for in a mare as she gets ready to foal. I started checking her every single day.
I have absolutely seen changes in my mare over the last 2-3 weeks. Some of the changes include: Swelling in front of udder has gotten bigger, Teats have moved forward (they had always been kind of tucked by her back legs), her belly is very round and sometimes changes shapes, her belly seems to be dropping lower in the last week, her vulva looks a lot different than it did a couple months ago.
I will add pictures to this post, and I know you can’t confirm a pregnancy in a mare without a vet, I’m just looking for opinions from someone that has more experience. I’ve done a lot of research but I’ve never had a mare foal before. Also, the pictures I have added to this post are the most recent pictures. I have been taking pics since July 22 and there are noticeable changes/ progression.
Am I crazy? Could something be wrong with her? Or could she actually be about to foal?!? Please help!
