Have just noticed a maxi cob class local to me in a few weeks. Would love to have a go, I have tried showing once but went in the coloured class and came second to bottom :( feedback from judge was it was how he rode.

So, my lad is 16hh v HW Suffolk X, first question is he big enough?

He is hogged, and his legs I keep clipped and his tail pulled - I understand this is correct cob turnout?

This is him (pre-hogging):

Does he look a suitable type?

If so, what is the correct turnout and tack? I have a double bridle for hunting, should he wear that? I only have black tack. Should I wear tweed? And if so, should I wear our autumn hunting getup, i.e. coloured shirt and tie, canary or beige jodhs, brown boots and gaiters? Or something else?

Will the judge ride him?

All advice gratefully received, I'd love to have a go!

Firstly he's gorgeous!

If you're showing at county level you should wear your double bridle, brown tack would be better, but if you have black then that should be ok.
Definitely tweed, brown or green, velvet collar. Whatever colour jods go with your tweed (I have a green tween and beige jods) I also have black boots and gaiters (not sure if you can wear brown or not)

He looks like just the type to put in a maxi cob class - the year before last, my friend took her heavyweight cob to Royal London, but we were a bit thick and missed our class by an hour, turning up just as the maxi cob class started, the judge was so nice and said "I can't bear to see you standing there all dressed up with nowhere to go, why don't you come in this class, obviously I can't judge you, but come in anyway" So she did.
It went exactly the same as the HW class we should have done - everyone went round together, then got pulled in, the judge rode all the horses instead of the riders doing an individual show.

I think the Maxi cob class was created as so many cobs these days are over 15.1hh (the maximum height for a "Cob" class)
So at 16hh you should fit right in!
Go and have a go, and let us know how you get on.
Ps there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't go in coloured classes either, don't be disheartened by coming last, I did it fairly regularly with Splish, but eventually we came good - practise makes perfect!

Splish and Mason's mum what a brilliant reply, you have answered all my questions, thank you! It is not county level I wouldn't dare, it's an equifest sponsored thingy. I shall have a go and yes of course will report back! :D
