Could this be mudfever?

We've had our cob mare since January and we've just trimmed her feathers. On her hind heels there's some whiteish crumbly looking scabs - nothing on her front ones. Could this be mudfever and should I remove them? Or, could it be something else? I've never seen mudfever "in the flesh" before. If I can work out how to post a piccie, I will.

In case it is mudfever wash the area well with Nizeral - you can buy it from the chemist. It works fast and painlessly.

Dilute in hand hot water and lather up well, work well into the hair right down to the skin. Make sure you wash well around the area too. You can leave this on - I usually do the first time I use it. Then rinse the next time - I've found that it usually goes within a week.

She does rub her back legs so maybe she does have mites. Are they visible to the naked eye do you know?

Sorry I am unsure. I know they are horrible for the horse. You get 2 types and one is blood norne and very hard to get free of. Hopefully yours will be an easy problem whether mud fever or mites.

No they arent visible and they live off dry skin, you need some help from the vet and they might be able to give the injection (although mine would not). You need some frontline from the vet and then you can use pig oil and sulphur to put moisture back into the skin on the legs to keep these mites under control.

Feathered horses are allergic to the saliva from the mites, horses with more blood breeding in them arent allergic so dont have the problem.

I would speak to the vet and find out what is wrong and then treat accordingly. My mare had mites (you can't see them) and I treated her feathers by spraying with frontline, then repeating the treatment 10 days later. haven't had any problems since then.
I use pig oil and sulphur in the winter to help prevent mud fever.

My cob gets field mites and it sounds just like this . Very flaky areas that can be a bit wet underneath. My cob usually will stamp on the ground. I used benzyl benzoate and lots of ie aqueous cream to stop the mites clinging and to suffocate them etc/moisturise. I have heard frontline works but on a previous post quite a few people had the vet provide an injection(someone mentioned on this thread). I never had a terrible problem as long as I did the above, trimmed feathers, creamed, benzyl benzoate etc and that was it. Mine wasnt bad enough to go down the injection route, but once I knew what it was just dealt with it myself(nipped it in the bud).

I've just spoken to someone else on yard and apparently several cobs have them so very likely that's what she's got. Although I think it's quite mild. I think I'll go down the benzyl benzoate/moisturising route. Really appreciate you all taking the time to post here.

If you can find an amiable pharmacy to order you in a big jars of Benzyl benzoate they can get it for you..its not that expensive, I slather that on. I think moisturiser is really important to soothe, keep feathers trimmed off ground.

I think?? that its quite field dependant I have had it worse in some fields than others too.

Worth keeping some hibiscrub if they get a bit sore but this is quite a strong cleaner so dont go too mad with Hibiscrub(it can be a bit stingy...I would dilute it and use it as you would shampoo and rinse off).

Yes, I'll try to get some although I believe pharmacists aren't always accommodating so I could get it off the internet. Do you put the benzyl on neat or dilute it? I've got hibiscub and would always dilute that. And yes, we're going to keep her legs trimmed and moisturised. Thanks.

Yes Benzyl benzoate goes on neat, its quite nice stuff! But to save using tons of it I always trim the feathers really well(my cobs feathers are really thick in the middle and the hair is coarse). So really get it right in there. I usually find putting it on by hand or syringing it right in and rubbing it in...i think you get the idea! I had one pharmacist brilliant but now they can be funny if its for animals.

Yep Hibi do dilute as its quite irritant as well if overused. I probably would only hibi once a week if you need to. The ie aqueous or similar is good for moisturising and I tend to do the bottom of the leg all over.

Good luck

Occasionally some doctors still prescribe BB for scabies (shudder) so don't offer any answers to the chemist - wait till they ask you what its for ;)
