last might I noticed what i thought was a graze on his legs like he has scraped it on something but today, in daylight, it is on both sides of his cannon bone on one back leg and there are 2 spots which have lost the hair on his other back leg, either side of the cannon bone.

There is no swelling, he is not sore, no heat, no big scabs but he has lost the hair and in places his skin is red looking and with little scabs like when you graze yourself. I cleaned with hibiscrub and the scabs just came off.

it is not weeping, no signs of puss, not lame.

the field he goes out in is unfortunately very muddy but he has his legs hozed down every night when he is brought in.

So is it mud fever or something else?

My plan is to treat by keeping him in until it has heeled and using hibi scrub and wondergel/sudacrem so mud fever or something else, fingers crossed, this should resolve but if it is mud fever, I would like to be able to look at options for prevention but if it is something else then it would be a waste of money.

what do you knowledgable guys think????

Just had one of mine with really bad mud fever. It wasnt visible, there was no heat etc, but as he went lame called vet, who also couldnt see anything (he even took back shoes off to check for problems there!). In the end he started to shave hair off legs and the skin just fell away leaving raw flesh. I felt aweful about this, but there was nothing visible, so it really wasnt my fault. The reason that I am replying is that the vet said under no circumstances to use hibi scrub as this dries wound bed, and wounds need to be moist to heal. Flamazine was used and of course antibiotics, but when worst cleared Sudocrem has been really effective. Hope this helps.

My gelding has something very similar by the sounds of it. He got really bad mud fever last year but that has cleared up. Now further up his legs the skin has come off but its not mud fever. You know how paint bubbles up on a wall and then flakes off, well it was like that. The hair is starting to grow back but now it has come up on his other leg. Im going to call the vet on monday as I think he may need some antibiotics. It isnt sore but I cant put anything on it as it seems to irritate it.

my mare had mud fever last year, was slightly lame then realised she had scabs on her back legs. i prevented it by using sport support boots which wrap right down under the fetlock stopping any mud from gettin in. I washed legs at night, dried them and applied liquid parafin (very cheap and worked wonders) its a very fine liquid so i just painted it on with a brush, not sticky or gloopy so easy to clean and left it on over night to sink in, then boots on in the day

are you drying legs off properly when hosing down, mud fever thrives in moisture. I'd only wash legs occasionally, not every day and plaster with sudocrem. It did the job on my mare.
